10 Little-Known Facts About Tigers

Big cats are rightfully considered the rulers of the jungle. They are among the most discussed, revered, beloved, and feared creatures anywhere in the world. Among all big cats, tigers are widely known for their wild and ferocious nature. There are many different tiger species, including the Bengal tiger, Siberian tiger, Malayan tiger, and others. They are the national animal of not one or two, but six countries: India, South Korea, Malaysia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Siberia. Here are ten more amazing facts about tigers you probably never knew.

1. Tigers have striped skin, not just striped fur. Stripes are like fingerprints, and no two tigers will have the same pattern.

Tigers have very distinctive and graceful stripes on their fur. These stripes are not only on the fur but also on the skin underneath. These stripes are the result of pigmentation in the skin. So, if you were to shave a tiger's fur, you'd see a hairless tiger with stripes!

Just as humans are born with unique fingerprints, tigers also have unique stripe patterns. No two tigers have the same stripe pattern. This allows them to identify each other. (1,2)

2. The tiger's tongue is so rough that it can lick flesh right down to the bones.

A tiger's tongue has small, sharp, spike-like projections called "papillae." Papillae are small, hard, hook-shaped bumps that cover the entire tongue. These papillae make the tongue so rough and tough that even a few licks can tear the skin and cause bleeding. This also helps tigers strip flesh and feathers from their prey. Furthermore, the more the tiger curls its tongue, the more intense its lick becomes. (1,2,3)

3. A tiger's roar can paralyze its prey.

A tiger's roar is deafening and capable of paralyzing any animal that hears it. Large cats have thick vocal cords located just below the vocal folds. Their characteristic roar is the result of the vibration of these vocal cords. Tigers produce two types of roars: one that is audible to humans and one that is inaudible to humans. The inaudible roar has a low pitch and low frequency. This sound is known to travel long distances through buildings, dense forests, mountains, and even bones. It can induce chills and, therefore, has the power to shock and paralyze other creatures. Thus, a loud, powerful roar can paralyze animals and sometimes even humans. (1,2,3)

4. Although tigers and lions appear to be the same size, tigers weigh 300 pounds/136 kg more than lions due to their greater muscle density.

Although tigers and lions, two large predators, appear similar in size and strength, tigers are significantly more ferocious than lions. Tigers weigh approximately 800 pounds, while lions weigh approximately 550 pounds. The reason tigers are stronger than lions is because they have a more compact, muscular, and toned body compared to lions, which are thicker. There have been many instances of tigers proving their strength by defeating lions in fights. In one instance, when a tiger entered a lion's enclosure, it severed the lion's jugular vein with a single blow.

Tigers and lions have different fighting styles. Tigers are known for their quick and precise attacks and killing intent, while lions are more interested in fighting and intimidating their prey. (1,2)

5. A tiger's night vision is six times better than a human's. Furthermore, its eyes are the brightest of any animal in the world.

Tigers have exceptionally good night vision. Their nocturnal lifestyle gives them an advantage over prey, whose vision deteriorates in the dark. Their eyes have more rods (which provide vision in low light) and fewer cones (which provide color vision and function better in bright light). Compared to humans, tigers see six times better at night, but their daytime vision is worse than ours.

Tigers have the brightest eyes of any animal. Their eyes have a special membrane that reflects light with incredible intensity through the retina. Unlike many other animals, tigers' eyes are located at the front of their heads, providing three-dimensional vision and an advantage when hunting. (1,2)

6. Siberian tigers are known to hunt bears. Traces of bear hair have been found in several tiger scat samples.

Siberian tigers are the largest animals in the big cat family. They weigh approximately 670 pounds and stand approximately 3 feet tall. However, bears are larger than tigers, weighing approximately 750 pounds and standing up to 4 feet tall. Despite their size and weight, Siberian tigers are known for hunting brown and black bears. Both animals are equally powerful in attack, but tigers are more skilled in combat. Furthermore, both animals use similar fighting techniques. Both rear up on their hind legs and lash out with their paws. Indeed, restraining a bear is a Herculean task, as their corpulent bodies protect them from serious injury. However, tigers, being agile and intelligent, always have the advantage in a fight. (source)

7. Tigers are solitary animals. They prefer to spend most of their time alone.

Tigers are not social creatures and live alone within their territories. This loneliness is one of the reasons why tigers have ceded the crown of "King of the Jungle" to lions. You'll typically see a tiger living alone, guarding its territory. Only for the first eight to ten weeks after the birth of the cubs does the mother remain with her cubs under their mother's protection. Once the cubs become independent, they leave their mother and find their own way. Male tigers travel in search of new territories and mating partners, while females typically remain within their territories. Thus, tigers lead a secretive lifestyle and avoid social interaction. (1,2)

8. There are "tigons." They are a cross between a lioness and a tiger.

Although tigers and lions are considered large cats, they belong to two different species. However, they sometimes interbreed, resulting in "tigons" or "ligers." A cross between a male tiger and a female lion is called a "tigon," while a cross between a male lion and a female tiger is called a "liger." This isn't a natural occurrence, as tigers and lions don't mate in the wild.

Tigons are smaller, weighing around 400 pounds. They are highly aggressive by nature and exhibit rather contradictory traits, as lions are social animals while tigers are not. They are susceptible to many diseases and have a shorter lifespan. (1,2)

9. Between 1800 and 2009, tigers killed an estimated 373,000 people.

No other big cat kills people as often as tigers. However, research also shows that tigers generally don't enter human habitats in search of prey. Only when humans enter the jungle do man-eaters attack them. Aging tigers, which gradually lose their strength and energy for hunting, are most likely to become man-eaters. Furthermore, another reason for tiger attacks is the increasing encroachment of humans into their habitat. Of this almost incredible 373,000 attacks, most occur in South and Southeast Asia.(1,2)

10. The markings on the tiger's forehead closely resemble the Chinese character meaning "king," giving tigers a cultural status as a royal animal.

Although each tiger has its own unique stripes, most share a similar forehead marking. This marking resembles the Chinese character "王," meaning "king." Thus, the Chinese consider tigers regal, fearless, and powerful animals. The tiger is a very special animal in Chinese culture, and has been worshiped for over 5,000 years. Young, energetic people are compared to tigers. A student who studied diligently to achieve a goal is affectionately called a "tiger child.". (1,2,3)
