A tiny invasive ant species, whose sting has been compared to liquid fire, has been discovered in 22 states. This alarms experts for two main reasons: it can cause dangerous allergic reactions and it decimates native ant populations, which help ecosystems function.<\/p>\n
In Georgia, one bite nearly proved fatal for gardener Susan Simon, who said she lost consciousness after the third bite, InvestigateTV reports.<\/p>\n
\u00ab"My family was here to help. Thank God. I passed out, and they caught me when I fell," she said, as reported by InvestigateTV.<\/p>\n
Researchers also warn of the environmental damage ants cause. A ten-year study of infested areas in Athens, Georgia, found that 60% native ant species had disappeared from the area.<\/p>\n
James Vogt, an entomologist with the U.S. Forest Service, said that in heavily infested areas, even lifting a piece of wood increases the chance of Asian needle ants being found inside.<\/p>\n
In some people, the bite can cause a severe allergic reaction.<\/p>\n
\u00ab"You won't know if you're allergic to it until you get stung," Simon said.<\/p>\n
Local ants perform a huge amount of work, often unnoticed by others: they loosen the soil, decompose organic matter, transport the seeds of local plants, and control the population of other insects.<\/p>\n
When Asian needle ants displace them, these familiar ecosystem services begin to be disrupted, ultimately impacting places where people live, garden, and recreate.<\/p>\n
Vogt recommends that people already sensitive to insect bites consult their doctor about whether it's a good idea to carry epinephrine (EpiPen) in case of a severe reaction.<\/p>\n
If you suspect you've discovered Asian needle ants, experts recommend not disturbing them. Instead, consult your local agricultural extension service.<\/p>\n
Pest control company Orkin also recommends sealing insect entry points, fixing leaks, and storing food in airtight containers.<\/p>\n
Clearing debris, fallen leaves, and mulch from around the perimeter of your home can reduce the number of nesting sites.<\/p>\n
