French-Iranian artist and activist Marjane Satrapi, whose graphic novel "Persepolis" brought the story of the Iranian people's struggle to millions around the world, has died. She was 56.<\/p>\n
The Elysee Palace statement announcing her death on Thursday praised Satrapi's work, saying her works "captivated a global audience.".<\/p>\n
\u00ab"Her passing marks the loss of a leading figure in French culture and an artist deeply committed to the idea of freedom, whose work carried a universal message and brought her enormous international recognition," the Elys\u00e9e Palace said in a statement.<\/p>\n
Satrapi was born on November 22, 1969, in Rasht, northern Iran, to a politically active leftist family. She was only 10 years old when the course of her life changed after the popular uprising that overthrew the Iranian monarchy and established the Islamic Republic.<\/p>\n
Women's and girls' rights were curtailed almost immediately after 1979, and for Satrapi, this meant having to wear a veil, being separated from her male school friends, and watching the adults in her life suffer repression.<\/p>\n
Years later, she recalled how she and her classmates would remove their veils during recess to tie them together to make a jump rope. She depicted this scene\u2014and countless others\u2014in Persepolis, her popular 2000 graphic novel-memoir that depicted the revolution through a child's eyes. <\/p>\n

Satrapi's rebellious spirit, captured in Persepolis with touching honesty and humor, inspired her parents, fearing trouble with the regime, to send her abroad in 1984.<\/p>\n
She spent several turbulent years in Austria, at one point becoming homeless and hospitalized with bronchitis, before returning to Tehran to study art. She completed her studies and was briefly married, but in 1994 she left Iran for good and moved to France.<\/p>\n
In 2007, the novel Persepolis was adapted into a film directed by Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud, which won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for an Oscar.<\/p>\n
Satrapi's work includes numerous graphic novels, which she preferred to call "comics," and films. In 2019, she directed the British biographical drama film Radioactive, starring Rosamund Pike as Marie Curie.<\/p>\n
But she has also been an outspoken critic of Iran's ruling elite and a prominent supporter of the "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement that emerged after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody in 2022.<\/p>\n
The Iranian women's rights organization, Narges Foundation, described Satrapi as a "fearless defender of feminism and women's rights" and as someone who "championed the struggle and resilience of Iranian women.".<\/p>\n
Last year, she said she had refused France's Legion of Honor, its highest national award, because of what she called the nation's "hypocritical attitude toward Iran.".<\/p>\n
Satrapi was married to Matthias Ripa, who helped translate Persepolis into English and was directly involved in many of her projects. Ripa died last year at the age of 52.<\/p>\n
