One of its effective applications is sandwich panels. These panels are used in partitions, facades, ventilation ducts, elevator shaft cladding, and in modular buildings. The primary goal in designing sandwich structures is to achieve high rigidity with minimal weight. Below, we'll discuss how to use CML for these purposes, including which materials and combinations increase rigidity without overloading the structure.

Sandwich construction It is a three-layer system: two outer rigid layers (cladding) and an inner layer (core) that provides thickness and bending resistance. This structure allows for the creation of lightweight panels with high mechanical stability. In such systems, the SML typically serves as the outer layer, but in some cases, it is used on both sides simultaneously—in double-sided cladding.

SML It's suitable for this task thanks to a number of properties: it holds its shape well, doesn't warp, is resistant to temperature fluctuations, and is compatible with adhesives and sealants. However, it doesn't have high bending stiffness on its own, especially at a thickness of 6–8 mm. Therefore, it's important to choose the right core and fastening methods to ensure the structure achieves the necessary strength without adding significant weight.

The first method Increasing rigidity is choosing the right core. Common options:

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) or extruded expanded polystyrene (XPS). Provides lightweight construction and thermal insulation, but requires reliable adhesion to the SML. The rigidity of the structure increases with increasing polystyrene foam thickness.

Mineral wool — used for fire-resistant panels and provides additional sound insulation, but requires a reinforcing layer and tight fixation with the outer linings.

Honeycombs made of aluminum or plastic. They have the best stiffness-to-weight ratio. When bonded to both sides, the SML creates a stable, lightweight panel with high deflection resistance.

Corrugated cardboard or fiberboard — used in temporary or low-load structures.

It's important that the core material not only provides thickness but also reliable adhesion to the fiberglass core. For this purpose, contact adhesives, epoxy, or polyurethane compounds with good penetrating properties are used. The adhesive is applied evenly over the entire surface, paying particular attention to edges and areas of potential stress.

The second method — working with panel geometry. By increasing the thickness of the sandwich element (for example, using 6 mm of SML + 40 mm of core + 6 mm of SML), high flexural rigidity can be achieved even with a low weight. This allows for the production of partitions and curtain walls that do not require additional stiffeners. The optimal layer thickness depends on the intended use: 20–30 mm is sufficient for interior partitions, while 40–60 mm is sufficient for exterior partitions.

The third way — localized reinforcement. Plywood, aluminum, or metal profile inserts can be installed in areas where panels are attached to the frame or in areas subject to high loads. These inserts don't add additional weight to the overall structure, but significantly increase rigidity at key points.

The fourth approach — spot calibration using ribs. If a lightweight yet durable structure is required, longitudinal ribs made of wood, metal, or dense foam can be added inside the panel. This reduces the movement of the face layers and prevents deformation without increasing the overall weight.

The fifth method — calibration of the fastening pattern. Sandwich panels with a CML can be fixed to a frame or framing with minimal fastener spacing. The smaller the distance between support points, the greater the panel's resistance to deflection. This is especially important to consider when installing on a ceiling or façade.

Additionally, when designing, the compatibility of layers in terms of thermal expansion coefficients should be considered. When exposed to temperature fluctuations, poor adhesion or inconsistent properties can lead to delamination. Therefore, it is important to use adhesives recommended by the CML manufacturers for such applications.

In preparing this article, some materials from the website alexstroi.ru were used — glass-magnesium sheet in sandwich structures

Publication date: August 10, 2022

Glass-magnesium sheet (GMS) is a sought-after material in multilayer structures that require a combination of strength, moisture and fire resistance, and geometric stability.
