She was 56 years old.<\/p>\n<p> Her family said in a statement to the Agence France-Presse news agency that the graphic novelist died &quot;of grief.&quot;.<\/p>\n<p> \u00ab&quot;Marjane Satrapi has passed away from grief just over a year after the death of Matthias Ripa, her husband and the love of her life,&quot; the statement said.<\/p>\n<p> Satrapi was born on November 22, 1969, in Iran. She grew up in Tehran during the 1979 Iranian Revolution and the subsequent rise to power of an Islamic fundamentalist government, during which many of her loved ones were persecuted and killed. She was later sent to Austria for her safety, and after graduating from college, she settled in Paris.<\/p>\n<p> Her experiences later inspired her to create an autobiographical graphic novel in 2003. <em>\u00abPersepolis: A Childhood Story\u00bb<\/em> and its sequel in 2004 <em>\u00abPersepolis 2: The Return of the Fatherland,<\/em> as well as two other works from this series. <em>\u00abPersepolis\u00bb<\/em> sold millions of copies worldwide and was named a newspaper in 2024. <em>The New York Times<\/em> one of the best books of the 21st century. <\/p>\n<p> \u00abPersepolis: A Childhood Story by Marjane Satrapi. Photo: Pantheon.<\/p>\n<p> In 2007, a film adaptation of the series, written and directed by Satrapi and her creative partner Vincent Paronnaud, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and was subsequently nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, making Satrapi the first woman to be nominated in that category.<\/p>\n<p> The film was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film, as well as BAFTA Awards for Best Film Not in the English Language and Best Animated Film. <\/p>\n<p> A still from the film Persepolis (2007). Photo: Andreas Rentz\/Getty.<\/p>\n<p> In a statement released June 4, the French government said the death of Satrapi, who received French citizenship in 2006, &quot;marks the loss of a leading figure in French culture and an artist deeply committed to freedom,&quot; NBC reported.<\/p>\n<p> The statement called her &quot;a great artist who turned Iranian childhood into a universal parable.&quot;.<\/p>\n<p> Last January, she was nominated for France&#039;s highest state award, <em>Legion of Honor<\/em> , but declined, citing the country&#039;s attitude toward Iran and Iranian immigrants.<\/p>\n<p> She later clarified her statements, saying: &quot;This is in no way an action or thought against France. On the contrary, I deeply love this country, which is my country,&quot; she reports. <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> .<\/p>\n<p> Satrapi eventually married Matthias Ripa, a Swedish actor and producer whom she called the love of her life.
