Graphic created in Canva Pro.<\/p>\n<p> On August 27-28, 2026, a very deep partial lunar eclipse will be visible from Europe, Africa, North and South America, with just over 96% of the Moon in Earth&#039;s shadow.<\/p>\n<p> Lunar eclipses occur when the Earth is between the Sun and the full Moon. During this event, the Moon passes through the Earth&#039;s umbra\u2014the dark center of its shadow.<\/p>\n<h2> Where will the partial lunar eclipse be visible in August 2026?<\/h2>\n<p> The best conditions for viewing the partial lunar eclipse in August 2026 will be in North and South America. According to Time and Date, approximately 12% of the world&#039;s population\u2014987 million people\u2014will see all phases of the eclipse (penumbral and partial), while approximately 16%\u20141.3 billion people\u2014will see the entire partial phase. Observing conditions will depend on local weather: statistically, the highest chance of clear skies is expected in the western United States, northern Chile, and inland Brazil.<\/p>\n<h2> What happens during a partial lunar eclipse? <\/h2>\n<p> Lunar eclipse map for August 27-28, 2026. Espenak, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center<\/p>\n<p> The eclipse occurring on August 27-28, 2026, will be the first deep partial lunar eclipse worldwide since September 18, 2024, and the last until January 11-12, 2028 (when only 2.4% of the Moon will be in the Earth&#039;s shadow zone). Thus, the partial lunar eclipse of 2026 will be the most spectacular lunar eclipse until the total lunar eclipse on December 31, 2028.<\/p>\n<p> During the August 2026 eclipse, a full &quot;Sturgeon Moon&quot; will rise and enter Earth&#039;s shadow later that night. The full Moon will dim, and by the peak of the partial eclipse, its color will take on a slightly reddish-orange hue. However, this will not be a true &quot;blood moon,&quot; as there will be no full lunar phase\u2014when the entire lunar surface is in Earth&#039;s shadow. This eclipse will occur between 9:23 PM ET on Thursday, August 27, and 3:01 AM ET on Friday, August 28 (1:23 AM and 7:01 AM GMT on Friday, August 28, 2026), with the peak of the event\u2014when the lunar surface will appear reddish\u2014at 4:12 AM GMT. This corresponds to the following local times in North America:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p> Eastern Time: 12:12 AM ET on Friday, August 28, 2026.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p> Central Time: 11:12 PM CDT on Thursday, August 27, 2026.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p> Mountain Time: 10:12 PM Mountain Time on Thursday, August 27, 2026.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p> Pacific Time: 9:12 PM Pacific Time on Thursday, August 27, 2026.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p> Alaska Time: 8:12 PM Alaska Time on Thursday, August 27, 2026.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p> This time is only for the maximum phase of the eclipse.
