Wow, what a suggestion. I bet you haven't, but you might have heard of it after it was renamed. in "Invasion of the Girl Snatchers"« when it came out in 1985. Although I think the chances are still pretty slim. If you want to find this movie on Tubi, know that it lists the original release date, but the updated title. I think whoever was in charge of marketing wanted viewers to understand that they were watching a 70s movie, but also understood that no one would click on it if it had the original title. I certainly wouldn't.

Hell, at least this particular work caught my attention because it's quite brutal, but not without charm. Stylistically, it's completely chaotic. There's a red-handed arrest operation, hapless detectives, and, for some reason, an alien death cult that plans to replace beautiful women with alien doppelgangers, though the reasons for this are never explained.

Invasion of the Girl Snatchers 1973

As for the genre, it could be called science fiction, but it's basically a sitcom. As a feature film, it's as terrible as a paper mill, but it has enough standalone moments to make it worth watching. Not because of the alien plot, but because of the way the detectives behave. Overall, it's incredibly stupid, which is probably why a film with a title like «"Hidan of Maukbeyangyou", is now located in the darkest corners of Tubi.

The Bra That Got Away

The action of the film "Invasion of the Girl Snatchers"« begins and takes place largely in a shabby motel room. Detective Sam Trowell (Hugh Smith) is leading an operation to bust drug and human trafficking rings with the help of his assistant Caspar (Ele Grigsby), safecracker Frederick (David Roster), and a burly bodyguard named Noname (Harlo Keyes). They're staying in a room connected to the suspected kidnappers' room and are about to send an undercover woman named Ruthie (Carla Rueckert) there with a tracking device hidden in her bra.

Invasion of the Girl Snatchers 1973

The plan is simple. Ruthie puts on a motion-activated bra, gets kidnapped by her captors, and Sam and his team track her back to their headquarters in hopes of finding other kidnapped women in need of rescue. Bingo, bang, boom. The operation couldn't be simpler. There's just one problem: Ruthie gets kidnapped naked, ruining the whole operation.

The situation is further complicated by what we learn: this isn't a typical human trafficking ring, but a death cult of sorts, led by an evil sorcerer named Af (Charles Rubin), who is enslaved by and directly subordinate to an alien named Utai (McCain Jeeves). If you're wondering where the film gets its title, the villains' lair, where they conduct their criminal activities, is known as Hidan of Maukbeyangjou.

Invasion of the Girl Snatchers 1973

As I understand it, Ruthie dies at the hands of Af after a painfully long ritual involving ratchet straps, black paint, and spells. However, she doesn't actually die, and her place is taken by the alien that now lives inside her. Dazed and disoriented, trying to operate its new human suit, the alien meets up with another alien using a woman's body as its host. Together, they plot against Sam, Caspar, and the rest of the gang, who are just as confused about all of this as I was while watching. «"Invasion of the Girl Snatchers"» .

This is really funny.

Although the plot is «Invasion of the Girl Snatchers» It leaves much to be desired. I really enjoyed the motel scenes featuring Detective Sam Trowell and his accomplices because it's essentially a pot-smoking comedy. Freddy spends most of the film smoking joints and hindering the investigation, and Sam, a strictly by-the-book but not particularly bright detective, constantly gets in his own way.

Invasion of the Girl Snatchers 1973

For example, when he plays the mission briefing tape, it says the tape will self-destruct in three seconds. But it doesn't, so he hides it in his back pocket to be on the safe side. During one of the chases at the end of the film, the tape finally explodes, and his reaction boils down to the phrase, "Wow, what a day I'm having!"«

It's not a highbrow film, but there's always a charm to botched busts, because as much as you might want to root for the good guys, it's far more entertaining to watch their endless failures to solve the case. The characters interact well in this kitschy B-movie style, but the alien plotline is too quirky and underused for the film to feel complete.

Invasion of the Girl Snatchers 1973

I'm all for low-budget alien films, of course, but the budget here was practically nonexistent. The most expensive prop was probably a cassette player. The scenes with the reanimated women possessed by aliens are not without humor, but I think it would have worked better if the women had simply been brainwashed by cult members, and the film leaned more toward the genre of a suspenseful detective comedy.

If you like the idea of watching something that isn't exactly a masterpiece, but has some interesting moments, then at the time of writing this article you can watch it for free. film "Invasion of the Girl Snatchers"« on Tubi.

Have you ever heard of the 1973 sci-fi comedy thriller about an alien invasion, Hidan of Maukbeyangyo?
