For Jedi, obtaining a kyber crystal serves as a profound rite of passage, testing their deepest vulnerabilities. Fans can see this moment in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Season 5, Episode 6, "The Gathering." It shows Ahsoka Tano and Yoda escorting six young Jedi to the icy world of Ilum, where the Force students must enter the kyber crystal caves and listen to the Force to find their own crystal, which calls to them.<\/p>\n

That's the beauty of Star Wars: fans even delve into cut content, like the Jawa village in Star Wars: Episode IV \u2013 A New Hope, to find even more lore to theorize about.<\/p>\n
The new Disney+ Star Wars series, Maul: Lord of Shadows, also hints at this connection, albeit with an even darker twist. In one scene, Maul is struck by a Force push, and the official subtitles explicitly state that his lightsaber speaks an alien language. If you listen to the episode's audio, you can hear faint, demonic whispers echoing from the lightsaber blade, echoing the sound effects from Star Wars: Episode I \u2013 The Phantom Menace. While the Jedi revere the living nature of kyber crystals due to their natural connection to the light side of the Force, dark side users typically ignore their sentience. The Sith, meanwhile, view kyber crystals solely as tools for domination, using the stones to generate raw, destructive power rather than harnessing their power through the Force. This is clearly demonstrated in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, where massive kyber crystals are revealed to be the source of the Death Star's superlaser. To power their planet-destroying weapons, the Galactic Empire open-pit mined the desert moon of Jedha, along with Ilum, using the crystals as weapons in true Sith style.<\/p>\n
Sucking blood from a kyber crystal is how Sith Lords, Inquisitors, and dark side users bend the stones to their will. They renounce their natural, spiritual connection to the crystal, forcing it to obey. At least in the real world, humans don't harm living crystals to create the real-world technologies of Star Wars. A Sith's kyber crystal isn't given; it's taken\u2014a lesson Darth Vader learns in the Marvel comics series "Darth Vader 2017.".<\/p>\n
Emperor Palpatine orders a mission to capture his kyber crystal, which ends with Vader visiting the river moon Al-Dolim, where he kills Jedi Master Kirak Infil and steals his kyber crystal. Vader is then ordered to Mustafar, where he must pour his pain and suffering into the crystal, causing it to "exhaust," turning any crystal red. This is why all Sith lightsabers have a crimson blade.<\/p>\n
