{"id":16225,"date":"2026-06-06T21:58:59","date_gmt":"2026-06-06T18:58:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/imgist.ru\/pechal-v-svyazi-so-spilom-200-letnego-duba\/"},"modified":"2026-06-06T21:58:59","modified_gmt":"2026-06-06T18:58:59","slug":"i-was-sad-about-the-felling-of-a-200-year-old-oak-tree","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/imgist.ru\/en\/pechal-v-svyazi-so-spilom-200-letnego-duba\/","title":{"rendered":"Sadness over the felling of a 200-year-old oak tree."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A 200-year-old tree in a National Trust garden has been felled over safety concerns.<\/p>\n<p> The trust said the red oak tree on the Saltram estate in Plymouth was affected by a &quot;progressive fungal disease&quot; that had affected its &quot;long-term structural stability&quot;.<\/p>\n<p> The statement said the decision was &quot;not taken lightly&quot; and all possible alternatives had been &quot;carefully considered.&quot;.<\/p>\n<p> Luke Barley, from the board of trustees, said it was a &quot;sad incident&quot; but &quot;the tree was affected by an aggressive fungus, meaning we had to take measures to ensure the safety of visitors and others who might be harmed if it fell.&quot;.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p> More news from Devon<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p> Hear the latest news from Devon.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p> Trust officials said they recognized the tree&#039;s importance to visitors, but the decision was made to &quot;prevent future danger to the public and ensure the long-term safety of the site.&quot;.<\/p>\n<p> In 2025, the tallest tree in the garden also had to be cut down after two large vertical cracks and fungus appeared on it.<\/p>\n<p> Barley said a number of experts were involved in making the decision, including Saltram Forestry staff who are qualified tree inspectors, regional and national consultants, and external tree care specialists &quot;who used advanced technology to measure the extent of rot at the base of the tree.&quot;.<\/p>\n<p> \u00ab&quot;Everyone agreed that leaving this tree in this place would be irresponsible on our part.&quot;.<\/p>\n<p> \u00abWe take our responsibility for safety very seriously, but also our responsibility to care for trees, because they provide us with so much: a home for wildlife, carbon storage, clean air and water, beauty and meaning for people.\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p> He added: &quot;We have a huge number of trees in Saltram and across the Trust that are carefully managed, and we have plans to plant millions more.&quot;.<\/p>\n<p> <em>Follow BBC Devon news on<\/em> X <em>,<\/em> <em>Facebook<\/em> <em>\u0438<\/em> <em>Instagram<\/em> <em>.
