Some are biographies, others are works of fiction in which the protagonist is inspired by real people. Here are a few such iconic characters based on real people.<\/p>\n

1. In the wild:<\/em> Christopher McCandless<\/strong><\/h4>\n

A film released in 2007 \u00abInto the Wild\u00bb<\/em> \u2014 is a biographical adventure drama written, directed, and produced by Academy Award winner Sean Penn. Based on the book by Jon Krakauer, \u00abInto the Wild\u00bb<\/em> tells the story of American backpacker Christopher Johnson McCandless, who settles in the Alaskan wilderness after backpacking across North America in the 1990s.<\/p>\n

McCandless, also known by the pseudonym "Alexander Supertramp," began his journey immediately after graduating from college. He traveled across the country and hitchhiked to Alaska with minimal supplies. Upon reaching the east bank of the Sushana River, McCandless discovered an abandoned bus, which he used as shelter.<\/p>\n

His plan was to travel west until he reached the Bering Sea, but Alaska's dense bush and difficult terrain prevented this. So he set up camp on a bus and began to subsist on the gifts of nature. His minimal supplies included 4.5 kilograms of rice, a semiautomatic rifle, a few books, and some camping gear.<\/p>\n

McCandless documented his life and experiences in the wilderness in detail in his journal and self-portraits. He hunted and foraged for food, but over time, food became increasingly scarce. After about two months of living on a bus, McCandless decided to return to civilization, but his plan was thwarted by the Teklanika River, which had significantly strengthened since he last crossed it.<\/p>\n

By this point, McCandless was exhausted, malnourished, injured, and too weak to undertake the dangerous trek. So he returned to his campsite, where he wrote a note on the bus asking for help. One day, he mistakenly ate poisonous berries and fell ill. He is believed to have died of starvation in August 1992 at the age of 24. (1, 2)<\/em><\/p>\n

2. Film series \u00abRocky\u00bb<\/em> :<\/em> Chuck Wepner<\/strong><\/h4>\n

American drama series about boxing \u00abRocky<\/em> \u00bb" tells the story of Rocky Balboa, who fought under the ring name "The Italian Stallion." Balboa is portrayed as an ordinary man who had to overcome enormous obstacles in both his personal and professional life. Over the course of ten films, we follow the rise and fall of this epic character, based on real-life professional boxer Charles "Chuck" Wepner.<\/p>\n

Wepner was an American former professional heavyweight boxer. In his 1975 title fight against Muhammad Ali, Wepner surprised everyone with his skill and came close to winning, losing by technical knockout in the 15th round. He also had notable victories over heavyweight champions Ernie Terrell and Randy Neumann.<\/p>\n

While Rocky's character is largely based on Wepner's life and career, his fighting style, iconography, and name were inspired by another boxing legend, Rocco Francis "Rocky Marciano" Marchegiano. (1, 2, 3)<\/em><\/p>\n

3. Film series about James Bond<\/em> : F. F. E. Yeo-Thomas<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Known as the world's best spy, James Bond from the film franchise James Bond<\/em> \u2014 a smart, courageous, and charismatic womanizer. Most men aspire to be like him, but few can live up to his heroic standards. That's why it's easy to dismiss this character as merely fictional.
However, the legendary character was actually based on one of the greatest spies Britain has ever known. A secret agent serving in the Special Operations Executive (SOE) during World War II, he went by the codename "White Rabbit." His name was F.F.E. Yeo-Thomas, and he was an incredibly handsome man, feared by his enemies.<\/p>\n

Yeo-Thomas infiltrated occupied France three times and reported directly to Winston Churchill. The Gestapo, the secret police of German-occupied Europe and Nazi Germany, arrested and tortured him, but he is known for evading execution by killing enemies with his bare hands.
Tales of his many daring adventures are the stuff of films, and his connection to Bond was revealed thanks to a document discovered in the National Archives in London. (1, 2, 3)<\/em><\/p>\n

4. Erin Brockovich<\/em> : Erin Brockovich<\/strong><\/h4>\n

\u00abErin Brockovich\u00bb<\/em> \u2014 a biographical film starring Oscar winner Julia Roberts \u2014 is based on the true story of American paralegal, environmentalist, and consumer advocate Erin Brockovich. In 1993, Brockovich won a landmark lawsuit against PG&E (Pacific Gas and Electric Company).<\/p>\n

Anderson v. Pacific Gas and Electric, known as the "Erin Brockovich case," alleged that PG&E was responsible for contaminating the drinking water in Hinkley, a small town in southern California. In the early 1950s, Pacific Gas & Electric built a compressor station in the town as part of a natural gas transmission system designed to supply electricity to four million customers.<\/p>\n

The plant used hexavalent chromium (chromium-6) to cool its cooling towers and prevent corrosion. However, the company also discharged toxic water from its cooling system into nearby ponds. For 14 years, PG&E continued to pollute groundwater without notifying local authorities.<\/p>\n

Residents suffered various health problems as a result of drinking contaminated water, including back and stomach pain, nosebleeds, and tumors. Erin Brockovich uncovered the truth and gathered evidence against the corporate giant, ultimately leading to a lawsuit.<\/p>\n
