But compared to all the talk, there's little action. Most of us, looking at a homeless person on the street, dream of helping. Sometimes we give them food. Then we go home and move on with our lives, hoping someone else will make a difference. Some people don't just hope and wait; they make their dreams come true. There are organizations around the world that truly help make the world a better place. Through a variety of unconventional projects and ideas, these nonprofits accomplish more than is expected.

1. An organization called "419 Eater" is scamming scammers. It wastes their time by pretending to fall for their tricks.

Image sources: 419eater, hall of shame, Facebook

«"Shiver Metimbers" is the pseudonym of the site's founder. 419eater.com . His real name is Michael Berry. The website specializes in stalling scammers, preventing them from profiting from a real person, using a technique called "scam bait." Volunteers stall the scammers and sometimes ask for photos of the scammers holding funny posters. The scammers send these photos, believing that once submitted, the volunteer will transfer the requested money. The photo then ends up in the "Hall of Shame" on the 419 Eater website.

As of 2013, 50,000 volunteers had registered on the site. The "419" scam is an advance-fee scam in which a person is asked to deposit a certain amount into the scammer's account in exchange for millions of dollars in future payments. The scam is named after Section 419 of the Nigerian Penal Code, which describes the crime of fraud. The organization's founder, Berry, was featured on Jeremy Vine's radio show on BBC Radio 2 in 2006, and members of the organization have appeared on several other programmes. (1,2)

2. Engineers Without Borders International is a non-profit organization that works to improve infrastructure and engineering practices in developing countries.

Image sources: colostate, ewb/facebook

Engineers are known as the builders of the future. This virtual organization is based in South Africa and the United States and collaborates with 65 other national EWB organizations to drive grassroots impact and improve quality of life.

Each member of the organization collaborates on multiple projects and research projects to build capacity and ensure sustainable development, addressing global challenges and sharing ideas and technical expertise. It also helps create groups where similar partnerships do not exist, and trains and connects engineering professionals and students. They have worked in countries such as Ghana, Canada, Australia, Honduras, Hong Kong, Kenya, Iran, Iraq, and Korea, among many others. (1,2)

3. My Friend's Place, an organization that provides shelter for the homeless, helps and inspires youth to build independent lives. Its work goes beyond simply meeting the basic needs of the homeless: food.

Image source: my friend's Facebook page

My Friend's Place started small. In 1988, its founders, Steve LePore and Craig Scholz, launched a mobile food delivery program for youth in the Hollywood area and soon realized it wasn't enough. They believed these teenagers were ending up on the streets due to abandonment, abuse, or neglect, and something had to be done about it. Two years later, they opened a place they called My Friend's Place, and it's much more than just a shelter.

They began offering "social services and creative opportunities," giving youth a chance to improve their lives and reach their full potential. More than 1,400 young people in the Los Angeles area are served by this organization, which partners with educational institutions and social services. About 400 volunteers dedicate their time and resources to this cause. This private organization also provides therapy to those in need, helping them cope with trauma of any kind. One of the organization's unique programs for "at-risk youth" is called "« Circus of the World »"This is a social and circus program created by famous Cirque de Soleil and Jeunesse du Monde, which helps young people discover their strengths and talents. It's also a platform for youth to express their creative potential, participate in performances, build new relationships, and feel included in society. (source)

4. Greening Detroit is a Detroit-based nonprofit group that has planted over 100,000 trees since its founding in 1989. It creates beautiful green spaces and educates youth about the environment.

Image sources: greeningofdetroit, TheGreeningofDetroit/facebook

Between 1950 and 1980, Detroit lost a significant portion of its trees to Dutch elm disease (a fungal disease spread by bark beetles) and urbanization. Due to economic hardship, these trees could not be replanted. The Greening Detroit program stepped in to change this situation and restore the city's green infrastructure. Imagine what life would be like in cities with absolutely no green spaces to escape the hustle and bustle of the city!

Through vocational training programs, community engagement, and environmental education, the organization has planted over 100,000 trees over the past 30 years. They also train students through their Green Corps program during the summer. They also engage Detroit residents in vocational training programs that provide practical skills for careers as tree care specialists, landscape technicians, floristry, urban agriculture, and more. More than 350 people have completed their eight-week course, which is recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor as a federal vocational training program. (source)

5. The nonprofit organization "Home with a Heart" is a shelter for senior dogs that cares for older dogs and dogs with special needs abandoned by their owners. They ensure that the dog has a home and doesn't die alone.

Cher and Joe Polvinale converted their home into an animal shelter in 2006. Cher, who lost her husband, now dedicates her time to caring for abandoned and sick dogs, giving them the love they need. As of 2018, 55 volunteers participate in various dog care activities, such as walking and bathing. The dogs also receive medical care, including checkups, surgeries, dental work, and more. Veterinary specialists are also available when needed. The shelter also houses cats. The pets are fed high-quality food and treats on its two-acre property.

They have two programs that help senior dogs and give them the love they deserve: "Help" and "Shelter for You." Through the "Help" program, they encourage people to come forward and give dogs a forever home in their hearts and homes. Through the "Shelter for You" program, the organization receives a K-9 Medical Miracles Grant for dogs, which provides the necessary medical care so that the dog can be placed with a family. Another touching gesture from the organization is the presence on their website of a memorial dedicated to dogs who have passed away. It reads: "Farewell, master, but not goodbye. Wherever I go, you too will live. I'm not in your face, for a moment, for a little while. When you come where I trod, you'll wonder why you cried.". (source)

6. Bidyanondo Foundation is an NGO in Bangladesh that sells 1,000 meals daily for just one taka (US$0.012) to help people feel less like beggars.

One of the Bidyanondo Foundation's projects is to provide food to those who cannot afford it for less than a penny, while maintaining their dignity. They distribute 1,000 food packages daily in eight districts of Bangladesh. They also have a project called "One Taka Treatment," through which they provide free medical care to students once a month through mobile medical camps.

The Bidyanondo Foundation was founded by Kishore Kumar Das, a social activist and professional living in Peru. In addition to food, the foundation also provides education, housing, and legal assistance to those in need in Bangladesh. When it began in 2013, it supported the education of 22 students. Today, it cares for 135 orphans living in two orphanages, and also operates a nursing home, a primary school, and two libraries. (source)

7. A non-profit organization called the National Association for the Preservation of Skin Tattoos allows people to preserve their loved ones' tattoos after their death and have them framed.

The National Tattoo Preservation Association (NAPSA) is an organization that allows people to donate their tattoos to loved ones through a service called "Save My Ink," much like preserving a cremated loved one's ashes. The organization's founder is Charles Hamm, an accountant from Cleveland. NAPSA charges a $115 initiation fee and a $60 annual dues. These funds are used to preserve the tattoo, and NAPSA does not profit from the service. Upon the owner's death, the tattoo is framed and passed on to their heirs. Beneficiaries aged 18 to 49 receive a $2,000 stipend, and those aged 50 and older receive $1,000 to help cover the cost of preserving the tattoo. Hamm, who believes the organization has a future, adores the Johnny Depp quote: "My body is my diary; my tattoos are my story.".

While it may seem abhorrent to some, Hamm has developed a process for preserving tattoos, which he considers "skin art." The beneficiary must notify NAPSA within 18 hours of the death of a loved one, after which NAPSA takes action. Hamm says this process is similar to that of a funeral director and is a way to honor the deceased's final wishes. (1,2)

8. Love Commandos is an organization in Delhi, India that protects young couples in love, whether from different religions or castes, and helps them get married.

In many parts of India, marrying someone of a different religion or caste is considered taboo. Relationships between couples from different castes or religions can provoke violence and lead to honor killings. An organization called "Love Commandos" helps and protects such young couples. They help couples fight persecution and provide them with shelter so they can marry and choose their partner. The organization also combats honor killings.

Love Commandos was founded in 2010 and, in its first five years, has helped over 42,000 couples. The organization operates hotlines for couples in difficult situations and also offers counseling to those in need. They assist only young couples who have reached the legal age for marriage in India (18 for women, 21 for men) and call their initiative "Mission Love." They have over 1,800,000 volunteers and 400 shelters across India. Their work has been featured on various media platforms across the country. (1,2)

9. In the US and Canada, there is an organization called Cleaning For A Reason that cleans the homes of women with cancer for free so they can focus on their health and treatment.

Since 2006, Cleaning For A Reason has cleaned the homes of 30,200 women living with various types of cancer (equivalent to $10 million in services). To achieve this goal, they have partnered with over 1,200 cleaning services. Debbie Sardone, the organization's founder and owner of Buckets & Bows Maid Service, started Cleaning For A Reason after one of her clients called her and said she couldn't afford a housekeeper because she was undergoing cancer treatment. Sardone hasn't looked back since. She teamed up with other cleaning services and educated people about the challenges women living with cancer face in keeping their homes clean. She gained support and grew Cleaning For A Reason into a significant organization. The organization will continue to clean for free until a cure for cancer is found. (source)

10. A tough-looking biker organization called Bikers Against Child Abuse protects victims of child abuse by guarding their homes and escorting them to court when children are afraid to face their abuser.

«"Breaking the Chains of Abuse" is the motto of Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA). When contacted by an authorized agency, BACA volunteers travel to meet with the child in a safe environment. At the first meeting, a volunteer gives the child a vest with a BACA logo patch. Wearing the vest is optional, but it gives the child a sense of security. Children are also given other gifts to make them feel happy and comfortable. Afterward, the child is given two contact numbers for the organization's volunteers, which they can call in case of an emergency or if they feel threatened. Volunteers accompany children to court, visit them frequently, attend meetings, and are always there for them when they need them.

The organization was founded by a licensed clinical social worker who wanted to fill the gaps in the system of support for children exposed to violence. It all began in Utah, USA, in 1995 with the idea of helping an eight-year-old traumatized child. Today, the organization is international, with chapters in Australia, Italy, the Netherlands, Greece, Iceland, and other countries, for a total of 17. (source)

«Thank you!» is the least we can say.

There's always a lot of talk about how to make the world a better place.
