A significant pest, particularly in the South Pacific, the longhorned tick transmits theileriosis in cattle. It is also associated with several tick-borne diseases transmitted to humans.<\/p>\n<p> Most ticks look relatively similar, and Asian longhorned ticks are no exception. In fact, to distinguish them from other members of the genus <em>Haemaphysalis<\/em> , they need to be examined under a microscope. Unfed female longhorned ticks grow to approximately 2 millimeters in length and 1.5\u20131.8 millimeters in width. After feeding, they can grow to almost five times their normal size.<\/p>\n<p> The Asian longhorned tick, native to temperate zones of several Asian countries, including China, Korea, Japan, and the Pacific Islands, remained in its traditional habitat until about ten years ago. The first longhorned tick discovered in North America was found on a sheep farm in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Despite dozens of customs stops during the importation of animals and materials, the tick finally managed to escape control. Since then, it has spread across the eastern United States. It has been found in at least 21 states, including New Jersey, North Carolina, New York, and Connecticut. It has even appeared in Arkansas. Despite several attempts to eradicate it from New Jersey, the longhorned tick has survived. It is now firmly established as an invasive species and shows no signs of slowing down.<\/p>\n<h2> Parasitic parthenogenesis<\/h2>\n<p> The most astonishing and at the same time terrifying thing about Asian longhorned ticks is their ability to reproduce asexually. They are one of the few creatures on Earth to possess this superpower. This macromitosis, called parthenogenesis, is one of the reasons for the Asian longhorned ticks&#039; success. Furthermore, Asian longhorned ticks can switch between normal reproduction and asexual parthenogenesis depending on population size.<\/p>\n<p> After feeding on cow blood, a female Asian longhorned tick can clone herself up to 2,000 times. After hatching, the eggs can easily infest a small area and decimate wildlife in a short period of time. Experts say they&#039;ve reached western states like Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, and Missouri, and their spread shows no sign of slowing. While human health is rarely directly affected by Asian longhorned ticks, livestock are completely at their mercy. These ticks, having cloned themselves into veritable armies, can quickly drain the blood of small animals, including calves and adult cows. They also sometimes spread and transmit a disease called theileriosis.<\/p>\n<p> When cows are infected with theileriosis, they may begin to show signs of anemia, lethargy, and difficulty breathing. As the disease progresses, infected animals may develop peritoneal edema, exercise intolerance, jaundice, and even abortion. Although the symptoms are similar to anaplasmosis, calves and young animals, in particular, typically experience more severe manifestations. Treatment options for theileriosis remain limited, so the risk of mortality in young animals is increased.<\/p>\n<p> In an article and interview published by Brownfield AG News, Sigrid Johannes, senior director of government affairs for the National Beef Producers Association, emphasized the importance of preventing the spread of Asian longhorn ticks. She said, &quot;They suck the blood of small animals and calves very quickly,&quot; Johannes said. &quot;They reproduce asexually, so they can quickly become a huge problem if sufficient precautions are not taken.
