Davis's contribution to the music industry is immense; he won five Grammy Awards during his career. He was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a non-performer in 2000. Davis headed several different labels, beginning as president of CBS Records in 1967. It was then that he attended a festival and saw Janis Joplin perform, after which he signed her band.
