The release of Maul: Lord of Shadows on Disney+ opened a new path for Lucasfilm in the Star Wars universe and explored new horizons previously unseen by the franchise. The two-part finale of Maul: Lord of Shadows premiered on Disney+ on Monday, May 4 (Star Wars Day), and was met with overwhelming praise from fans and critics alike. Actor Sam Witwer, who played Maul, said Lucasfilm president Dave Filoni challenged the creative team behind Maul to raise the bar for animation and storytelling in Star Wars, and the final product delivered brilliantly.<\/p>\n
Star Wars animated films have been a vital part of the franchise since The Clone Wars premiered in 2008. However, since Disney acquired Lucasfilm from George Lucas in 2012, they have become an even more significant part of the galaxy far, far away. For the most part, Star Wars animated films have been fairly similar in tone, art style, acting, and so on, and they all seem to be primarily aimed at children.<\/p>\n
But "Maul: Lord of Shadows" turned everything on its head. The series took risks no other animated series had ever taken, hitting home-run shots that could easily have gone wrong. Fortunately for Lucasfilm, Disney, and Star Wars fans, "Maul: Lord of Shadows" hit the mark and hit a home run. In many ways, it truly did hit the ball out of bounds and rewrote the rules for Star Wars.<\/p>\n
Many Star Wars fans will tell you that much of the animated content is excellent. The Clone Wars was a huge success and did a great job of improving on the prequel trilogy. Star Wars Rebels helped bridge the gap between the prequel trilogy and the original trilogy by introducing fans to new characters. The Tales shorts are fun little clips that add depth to some of the characters. And we can't forget The Bad Batch, which continued to humanize the clones by exploring the horrors of war faced by real-life service members and veterans.<\/p>\n
However, if fans could find one common flaw in all of these series, it would likely be the "mission of the week" structure, where each episode or short story arc consists primarily of minor side quests with little overarching plot. Maul: Lord of Shadows completely defies this pattern.<\/p>\n
The recent Disney+ series chose a single storyline for each group of characters, and they gradually intertwined over the course of ten episodes. There was nothing superfluous, no drawn-out moments, and nothing insignificant happened.<\/p>\n
Even Star Wars series like The Mandalorian sometimes felt like an anthology, but Shadow Lord took a more Andor-like approach. Everything was interconnected and built toward the same climax.<\/p>\n
This style of storytelling is something completely new for Star Wars animation, and that's certainly a good thing. It's time to break that mold, and "Shadow Lord" did so with remarkable success.<\/p>\n
George Lucas always made it clear that Star Wars was a franchise primarily aimed at children. Yes, adults could enjoy the content, but the target audience was always children. Disney has gradually moved away from this principle, especially over time. For example, Andor was definitely not a series for younger audiences due to its themes, complex script, and mature content. Now, Shadow Lord has followed suit.<\/p>\n
\u00ab"Lord of Shadows" is definitely more accessible to children than "Andor," because it doesn't contain the same mature content and because the writing style is a bit simpler. However, "Lord of Shadows" still touches on some extremely heavy themes that children might not understand.<\/p>\n
For example, a significant portion of Maul's storyline in the series of the same name centers on his personal trauma and how that trauma continues to manifest itself years after he experienced it. The series' main plot also revolves around the protagonist's (Maul) attempts to psychologically manipulate a literal child (Devon) into succumbing to the worst aspects of her nature and becoming evil.<\/p>\n
On top of that, "Shadow Lord" is significantly darker than the 90% Star Wars projects, leaving viewers to imagine some of the grisly moments (like the scratches on the table after Marrok "interrogates" Chief Klyce). Much of the signature Star Wars humor often found in animated series has been removed.<\/p>\n
Other animated Star Wars series have explored more mature themes. The later seasons of The Clone Wars were certainly a bit more extreme than the earlier ones, but the show never lost its appeal to children. Shadow Lord is a show for adults, and thanks to its success, fans can expect more mature animated projects in the future.<\/p>\n
In "Maul: Lord of Shadows," the main character isn't necessarily portrayed as a positive character, but for much of the series, he's presented as a protagonist. Everything is told from his perspective, as well as from the perspectives of Devon and Captain Lawson. The latter two would be more traditional protagonists in a story pitting good against evil, but "Maul: Lord of Shadows" does something different.<\/p>\n
Thus, for the first time in Star Wars history, the focus is on a clear villain. As mentioned, the film doesn't attempt to portray him as a hero at heart, but it does evoke sympathy in the audience, at least in certain circumstances.<\/p>\n
While turning a villain into the show's protagonist is a major change, what makes "Shadow Lord" special is that one of the other two main characters, Devon, gives in to her rage and anger at the end of the season and openly admits that she wants to be trained by Maul and learn the ways of the dark side in order to achieve her revenge.<\/p>\n
So, one of the main characters is already a villain, the second essentially becomes a villain by the end of the series, and then the third hero (Lawson) is killed. There's no other way to put it: in "Maul: Lord of Shadows," there's no victory for the good guys, and it's not exactly a feel-good story from a galaxy far, far away.<\/p>\n
Star Wars has its share of stories where heroes fail. In The Empire Strikes Back, Luke lost to Darth Vader, Han Solo was frozen in carbonite, and the Rebel Alliance was driven into a corner. Yet at the end, when Luke and Leia look up at the stars and Lando Calrissian promises that he and Chewbacca will bring Han back, there's still a sense of hope for the film's heroes.<\/p>\n
There's no sense of hope at the end of Shadow Lord, and that was entirely intentional. The only Star Wars film that can compare to Shadow Lord in this regard is Revenge of the Sith. That film's finale is extremely dark, and the villains win. However, fans at least know where the plot is heading, and they knew this even when the film was released in 2005. Since the original trilogy came out before the prequels, everyone knew perfectly well that the Emperor would die, the light within Vader would prevail, and there would be a happy ending.<\/p>\n
No one knows how the story with the Shadow Lord will end. It's not even certain that anything good will happen. It's entirely possible that, since Maul has no apprentice in Rebels, Devon could die.<\/p>\n
\u00ab"Maul: The Shadow Lord" changed the nature of Star Wars in many ways.
