When I was shopping for a compact family crossover, my eyes fell on the then-new 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLB. I wanted a car smaller than the classic GLC, but with character and practicality. Now, three and a half years and 60,000 kilometers later, I'm ready to share my most honest and down-to-earth review of what it's like to drive the "little Geländewagen" daily in the realities of the Russian city and on country trips. This isn't a story about brochure specs, but about real-life ownership experience.

The first thing that strikes you about the GLB is its exterior. It doesn't try to be sleek and cute like many of its competitors. Instead, its design is rugged and angular, with straight rooflines and square wheel arches. It's a small, armored car that always turns heads. In three years, I've never regretted choosing this particular exterior. The build quality of the body and paintwork is up to the standard expected of the brand. There are no cracks, squeaks, or signs of corrosion. But the premium appearance comes at a price: even minor scratches and chips are expensive to repair, and repainting the bumper, if necessary, is quite expensive.

Inside, the typical Mercedes atmosphere of understated luxury and high technology reigns. Contrary to popular belief, the base trim's cabins are not shabby. High-quality soft-touch plastics, soft-touch fabric or faux leather seats (depending on the version), and metal accents are featured. The build is impeccable—not a single extraneous sound. The MBUX multimedia system with two 10.25-inch displays is a universe unto itself. It takes some getting used to: controls via a touchpad, touch-sensitive buttons on the steering wheel, and voice commands ("Hey, Mercedes"). For the first month, I felt like I was in a spaceship, but then I came to appreciate the convenience and functionality. The system learns, remembering frequently used routes and settings.

Engines, performance, and fuel efficiency: what the real numbers show

I have a GLB 200 with a 1.3-liter turbocharged gasoline engine producing 163 hp, mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. When I mentioned the engine displacement to friends, many of them shook their heads. But in practice, this unit is a true marvel of engineering. It doesn't feel small. Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph takes about 9 seconds, which is more than enough for a family crossover. The turbocharged engine picks up from low revs, with virtually no lag. The automatic transmission is fast and smooth, especially in Sport mode.

The biggest surprise is the fuel consumption. In a combined city driving cycle with traffic, I get 8.5-9.5 liters per 100 kilometers. On the highway, with cruise control engaged at 110-120 km/h, consumption drops to a fantastic 6-6.5 liters per 100 kilometers. For a car of this size and weight, this is an outstanding result. In winter, naturally, the figures increase by one to one and a half liters. Engine servicing at an authorized dealer is not cheap (scheduled maintenance starts at 30,000 rubles), but the intervals are long—every 20,000 kilometers or once a year. I prefer not to skimp and get service at the dealer to maintain all warranty obligations and original spare parts.

As for reliability, I haven't had any major issues in 60,000 km. An exhaust system error code came on once, but after restarting the engine, it disappeared and hasn't reappeared. I get a full computer diagnostic once a year to stay up-to-date on the condition of all systems. I change the oil strictly according to the schedule, using only the recommended 0W-20. I change the air and cabin filters at every maintenance, and the fuel filter every 60,000 km. The spark plugs are still original; I plan to change them at 80,000 km. Overall, the engine's performance is impressive with its smoothness and efficiency.

Dynamics: sufficient for the city and confident overtaking on the highway, sport mode changes the character of the car.

Fuel consumption: the main advantage, real economy exceeds many expectations.

Gearbox: works perfectly in 95% cases, in traffic jams it can be a little slow.

Engine sound: not audible in the cabin, excellent sound insulation.

Ecology: meets high standards, which is important when entering some European cities.

Practicality, space and living with MBUX technologies

Despite its compact exterior dimensions, the GLB is incredibly spacious inside. This is achieved thanks to the straight roofline and clever packaging. Three adults can comfortably fit in the back seat, with ample legroom. The trunk, with a capacity of approximately 500 liters in its standard position, is one of the best in its class. It's square, with a low loading height. The foldable second-row seatbacks create a nearly flat floor. I've used it to transport building materials, a bicycle, and even a small wardrobe—it handled it perfectly.

Technology permeates the entire ownership experience. Besides MBUX, there's a smart key, keyless entry and push-button start, a head-up display (optional), and multicontour seats with massage and ventilation (optional). The driver assistance system with adaptive cruise control and lane centering is a real lifesaver on long trips. It's not an autopilot, but it significantly reduces the workload. You need to learn to trust the electronics and understand their limitations. Surround cameras and parking sensors make driving a large car in the city simple and safe.

However, technology isn't all about joy. Any complex system has the potential to fail, and repairs can be very expensive. Everything works fine for now, but I'm still apprehensive. It's also worth noting that software updates can sometimes cause minor glitches that can be resolved with a system reboot. Overall, the technology integration is very high-quality; it genuinely adds convenience and isn't just a marketing gimmick.

Winter and summer operation: features of a premium crossover

Winter is the time when all the comfort and safety systems are put to the test. The GLB, with front-wheel drive and high-quality winter tires (I have Nokian Hakkapeliittas), handles surprisingly confidently. The stability control works subtly and unobtrusively. Heated steering wheel, seats, windshield (wiper area), and mirrors are all standard and work perfectly. Remote engine start with the key (optional) is a lifesaver on frosty mornings. Climate control with residual heating allows you to get into a warm car. Fuel consumption, as mentioned, increases in winter, but not drastically.

Winter tires: A must, premium tires are recommended to maintain handling.

Washer: powerful, with heated nozzles (optional), you still need to use high-quality antifreeze.

Battery: In premium cars with a lot of electronics, it experiences high loads, so monitoring its condition is essential.

Wash: Regularly washing the body and especially the underbody from reagents is the key to a long life.

Garage: If possible, it is best to store in a heated garage during the winter, but this is not a requirement.

In summer, the GLB's most powerful air conditioning and panoramic roof (optional in my case) are my best friends. The air conditioning copes with any heat, and the cabin cools quickly. The panoramic roof adds a sense of spaciousness, but it's important to remember that it adds weight and is another complex mechanism that may require repair. On summer trips to the countryside, the GLB proves to be the perfect companion: its high ground clearance allows for unpaved roads, the large trunk accommodates everything you need, and the comfortable interior makes the road part of the experience.

Financial results and target audience

Owning a Mercedes-Benz GLB is a conscious choice for a premium experience, technology, quality, and a certain status. It's not the cheapest car in its class, either to buy or to maintain. But it's also not the most expensive among its peers, bearing the three-pointed star. My average annual expenses (excluding loans/leasing) include: comprehensive insurance and compulsory motor vehicle liability insurance (around 80,000 rubles), scheduled maintenance (30,000-40,000 rubles), fuel (depending on mileage, mine is around 50,000 rubles per year), seasonal tire changes (5,000 rubles), and car washes and dry cleaning (15,000 rubles). Total: around 180,000-200,000 rubles per year, with my mileage being 15,000-20,000 km. You need to understand this and be prepared.

So, who do I recommend the 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLB for? Young, successful families or couples without children who value style, technology, and quality while also needing a practical and spacious vehicle. Those who drive a lot in the city and on the highway and value fuel economy combined with a premium feel. Brand fans who want a modern, technologically advanced, but not gigantic, crossover. Who shouldn't buy it? Those for whom maintenance costs are a critical factor. Those who fundamentally distrust complex electronics. Those who need a true SUV with serious off-road capabilities.

My personal verdict: I'm absolutely happy with my purchase. The GLB has fully met my expectations. It's beautiful, technologically advanced, practical, fuel-efficient, and a true joy to drive and own. Yes, all of this comes at a price, and a hefty one at that. But in this case, I feel I get what I pay for: quality, status, safety, and cutting-edge technology. If you're looking for a compact premium crossover and your budget allows, the Mercedes-Benz GLB should be at the top of your list. It's a car you can show off, enjoy driving, and be comfortable using every day.

Buying a car with a three-pointed star on the hood always comes with certain expectations: impeccable quality, status, and a special driving experience.
