That's how the 2019 Volkswagen Polo sedan in the Highline trim came into my life. Three years and 80,000 kilometers later, this seemingly simple car completely changed my perception of the class. It turned out to be more than just a piece of hardware, but a well-thought-out companion that never let me down in either the heat or the bitter cold. I bought it new, and now, after all this time, I can give a detailed review based on real-world use, not just test drives from magazines.<\/p>\n

Yes, this is no sports car. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km\/h takes about 11 seconds. But in city traffic, that's more than enough. The automatic is smooth and doesn't lag, and on the highway, the engine doesn't rev too much in higher gears, which has a positive effect on fuel consumption. The most important thing is absolute reliability. In 80,000 km, I've only changed the oil, filters, and spark plugs. Not a hint of a problem. In winter, it starts up in half a turn, even at -30\u00b0C. Fuel consumption is a strong point. In the city, taking traffic into account, I get a stable 8.5-9.5 liters per 100 km. On the highway, if you drive 90-100 km\/h, you can get an incredible 5.5-6 liters. In the combined cycle, the figure hovers around 7.5 liters. This is a significant savings for the family budget.<\/p>\n

How the Polo performed in everyday life and on the road<\/h2>\n

The biggest surprise is the spaciousness. Despite its compact exterior dimensions, the interior is incredibly spacious. I'm 185 cm tall, and I have plenty of room both in the driver's seat with ample headroom and in the back if I move my seat back. The 510-liter trunk is a gem. We spent a week at the seaside with a family of three, and the trunk easily accommodated a suitcase, a bag, a folding barbecue, and a bunch of other small items. The trunk lid opens high, making loading easy. In everyday life, I often transport seedlings, bags of soil, and building materials to the dacha\u2014I folded the rear seat (it folds 60\/40) and got almost a station wagon.<\/p>\n

The Highline trim level was impressively equipped. The climate control works flawlessly, quickly warming the cabin in winter and cooling it in summer. Heated front seats, mirrors, and the windshield (in the wiper area) are a must-have for our winter. The standard multimedia system with a large screen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto is convenient and modern. The sound is good, and the navigation is accurate. Nice touches include LED interior lighting, a height- and reach-adjustable steering wheel, and a full range of power accessories. The car makes you feel well-cared for.<\/p>\n

What could be improved: the downsides I've come to terms with<\/h3>\n

No car is perfect, and the Polo has its drawbacks. First, the suspension. It's quite stiff, especially the rear beam. It's tolerable on shallow washboard surfaces, but when driving over sharp joints or deep potholes, the impact is transmitted to the bodywork quite noticeably. Second, the soundproofing. On poor-quality asphalt or concrete, the cabin becomes quite noisy, mostly due to the hum of the wheels. Third, the standard lighting is rather weak. The standard halogen headlights are mediocre, and on unlit country roads, the range and beam width are insufficient. I solved the problem by installing high-quality LED bulbs in the low-beam headlights (not to be confused with xenon bulbs, which are important for legality).<\/p>\n

  • Service. The official dealer is expensive. After the warranty expired, I switched to a trusted independent service center specializing in VAGs. Prices for labor and genuine parts have become 1.5-2 times lower. Scheduled maintenance (oil, filters) now costs 12-15 thousand rubles.<\/li>\n
  • Tires. The standard R16 wheels are a good compromise between comfort and handling. I choose mid-range tires, not the cheapest ones. I change them every 3-4 seasons.<\/li>\n
  • The electronics are reliable. There were no glitches. Everything works like the first day. The only thing is that sometimes at very low temperatures (-25\u00b0C and below), the multimedia screen can lag a little for the first few minutes after startup.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
