As a fan of "Survivor" and Sam Raimi's twisted mind, I was absolutely thrilled with "Send Help"... so imagine how thrilled I was to learn that the filmmakers had done a good job with the story. In fact, the audition tape For<\/em> \u00ab"Survivor," which features downtrodden office worker Linda Liddle (Rachel McAdams) trying to get on the real-life reality show, is based on a real audition video for "Survivor"\u2014an audition video, no less. winner<\/em> .<\/p>\n

Of course, credit must be given. Eagle-eyed "Survivor" fan and former "Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin" writer Neil MacNeil discovered this absolutely stunning detail about "Send Help." On the social media platform X, MacNeil posted a video of Aubrey Bracco's original "Survivor" audition\u2014presumably for the actual 32nd season of "Survivor: Ka\u00f4h R\u014dng"\u2014and wrote, "The realization that Bracco's audition tape for "Survivor" served as the inspiration for Linda Liddle's character in "Send Help" is mind-blowing.".<\/p>\n

McNeil is right; two videos almost perfect<\/em> The scenes are identical, from the opening, where Bracco (and Linda) appear among the plants to announce themselves, to the frankly convoluted "plot" of Bracco's video describing her daily commute. Frankly, since Bracco is a fan favorite and won the landmark 50th season of "Survivor," something Raimi had no way of knowing at the time, it's almost certainly not a coincidence, but it's a really, really fun Easter egg for those who love both "Survivor" and "Send Help." So is there any other similarity between Bracco and Linda? In a way, yes! <\/p>\n

Let's turn for a moment to Aubrey Bracco, the woman who managed to snatch victory, the title of Sole Survivor, and the $2 million prize (doubled, oddly enough, by Mr. Beast) on "Survivor 50." Unfortunately for Bracco, a player I have virtually no strong feelings about, it wasn't a particularly good run on "Survivor" overall, and the season's dreary atmosphere only worsened as we reached the finale with a rather challenging final three. After all, Bracco's competitors for the top prize, Jonathan Young and Joe Hunter, weren't really competitors\u2014Hunter played one of his weakest strategy games in recent memory, and Young simply didn't have the presence of mind. liked<\/em> \u2014 so Bracco won "Survivor 50" in large part because she was the least hated person in the stands.<\/p>\n

If you're familiar with the episode "Help," you'll notice some similarities between Bracco (the real person) and Rachel McAdams's character, Linda Liddle (the fictional character). Bracco is portrayed as meek and unassuming, and no one would be intimidated by her during a physical challenge. In "Help," Linda, who is passed over for a promotion before a business trip with her incompetent boss and immediate family member, Bradley Preston (Dylan O'Brien), which leaves them stranded on a desert island, comes across as meek and, frankly, odd. (I don't want to denigrate Bracco by suggesting that she, like Linda, eats stinky tuna sandwiches in an open office.) However, Bracco ultimately pulled ahead and became the sole survivor of the show's long-awaited 50th season, even though her on-screen "analogue," Linda, is considerably more unpleasant.<\/p>\n

The reason The Help is so incredibly engaging from start to finish is because it is, without a doubt, one of the most delightfully vile films in recent memory. (By the way, spoilers ahead<\/strong> !) After Bradley and Linda find themselves the only survivors of a small plane crash in the ocean, it quickly becomes apparent that Linda, a huge fan of The Revenant, knows exactly how to survive in the wild, making the most of natural resources. (That's movie magic, to be precise. I'm a huge fan of The Revenant, as are many of my friends; I wouldn't trust any of us to survive on a desert island.) Linda, finally in control of Bradley, is clearly relieved to finally have him under her control, and after leaving him to his own devices and dehydrated to the point of death, she reluctantly keeps him alive. (At least for a while.) <\/p>\n

Again, with all due respect to Aubrey Bracco, I don't think she would physically threaten another Survivor contestant the way Linda threatens Bradley. (And, by the way, I also don't think Bracco could make sashimi as beautiful as Linda did in "Send Help.") There's something about Linda that reminds me more of Survivor legend Parvati Shallow\u2014who has her own opinions on what Survivor has become, and all of her opinions are valid\u2014in that she's playfully cruel and devious when necessary. Ultimately, it's ideal<\/em> Easter egg for Sam Raimi and his team to sneak into "Send Help.".<\/p>\n
