The 2024 reboot of the 1989 cult classic became Amazon Prime Video's most-watched original film, garnering over 50 million viewers in its first two weekends. This success quickly greenlit a sequel, in which Gyllenhaal will reprise his role as former UFC fighter Elwood Dalton. Now that filming has wrapped and post-production is underway, Naishuller has given the first real glimpse of what viewers can expect.<\/p>\n
In an interview with ScreenRant, Neishuller discussed the studio's ambitions: "I remember Amazon saying, 'We should try to make this bigger,'" he said. "I was pleased to hear that.".<\/p>\n
Naishuller replaced Doug Liman, who helmed the first film, as director. The director made it clear that he wasn't attempting to radically reimagine the franchise. "The point of working on a franchise isn't to make it your own," he explained. "It's about adding something of your own to the story, while simultaneously catering to the core audience and attracting new people." He noted that restraint is also important. "You don't always have to add more of yourself. There are so many ideas, we discussed various aspects, but at some point you realize it becomes distracting.".<\/p>\n
The scale of the film became palpable during filming. Naishuller described walking down a hallway filled with the cast of Road House 2 and telling Jake Gyllenhaal, "This is a huge movie. I can't wait to show it to everyone.".<\/p>\n
The sequel features a significantly expanded cast. Dave Bautista joins the ensemble, stating in an interview with Collider that the film is "a vast improvement over the first film" and has "a lot more fighters, a lot more tough guys." The cast confirms this. Indonesian action star Iko Uwais, known for his roles in The Raid, plays a key role. UFC lightweight fighter Dustin Poirier and fighter Jay Heiron have real-life combat experience. Actors Aldis Hodge, Peter Sarsgard, and others round out the cast.<\/p>\n
Road House 2 is expected to be released sometime in late 2026 or early 2027.<\/p>\n
