Prince Harry is planning to visit the UK this summer to promote the Invictus Games, a royal expert has revealed. Newsweek,<\/em> that a meeting with King Charles III would increase the chances of a broader reconciliation.<\/p>\n

In a September interview, the Duke of Sussex said that for the next 12 months, "the focus has to be on my father," with another potential opportunity to see his father coming in just under a year.<\/p>\n

The official purpose of the trip, however, is not to meet the King, as he is heading to Birmingham to mark the year remaining until the 2027 Invictus Games, his Olympic-style tournament for wounded veterans, which will be held in Britain's second-largest city. <\/p>\n

Prince Harry's relationship with his family has been strained for nearly a decade, since Meghan Markle's arrival in the royal family sparked debate about whether members of the royal family were doing enough to help her cope with what the Sussexes described as hostility from the British media.<\/p>\n

Prince Harry's visit to the UK and his relationship with the King.<\/h2>\n

The British press is already discussing one option: whether Charles might invite the Sussexes to Balmoral in the summer.<\/p>\n

\u00ab"I think the King should invite Harry and Meghan this summer," British royal commentator Afua Hagan said in an interview. Newsweek<\/em> . "Whether they will go remains to be seen, but I think he should invite them, and most likely he will.".<\/p>\n

One benefit of such an arrangement would be that an invitation from the King would likely help Harry persuade the Home Office to provide him with police protection, which he says is necessary because of the level of threat existing in the UK and because private security companies do not have the same powers as British police and cannot carry weapons.<\/p>\n

In 2020, Harry and Meghan lost their police bodyguards after leaving the palace, but they were occasionally provided with a team of bodyguards on an ad hoc basis for events they were invited to by members of the royal family, such as Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee.<\/p>\n

However, the trip to Balmoral could lead to a meeting with Prince William, who is widely reported to be the most vocal in his opposition to allowing the Sussexes to return to the UK.<\/p>\n

If a trip to Balmoral proves unrealistic, Harry's best option would likely be to meet the king before his departure for Scotland. Finding time in the monarch's busy schedule will be one of the challenges he will face.<\/p>\n

Harry's Invictus activities<\/h2>\n

Upon arriving in the UK, Harry has a busy schedule of Invictus events planned in Birmingham, and as with previous visits, headlines will be focused on whether he will meet his father. Sources interviewed Newsweek<\/em> , stated that it is too early to talk about the possibility of such a meeting.<\/p>\n

Previous Invictus One Year to Go events have been short, limited to one day, but as it has become known Newsweek<\/em> , this year they will last a little longer.<\/p>\n

In theory, this could give father and son more time to find the right moment to meet, but geography also plays a role, as Birmingham is about 90 minutes by train from London.<\/p>\n

The monarch will likely be busy, too. One of the reasons King Charles visited America in April to mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, rather than attend the main Fourth of July celebrations, is that the period leading up to Balmoral is very busy for him.<\/p>\n

\u00ab"The king and Harry could have had much more time to fit it into their schedules and sit down at the negotiating table," Hagan said.<\/p>\n

\u00ab"I think this is a wonderful opportunity for them to have these conversations and sow the seeds of reconciliation. I definitely think they'll have a face-to-face meeting.".<\/p>\n

Not meeting would be a "very bad sign.".<\/h2>\n

During his last trip to the UK in September, Harry spent less than an hour having tea with the king at Clarence House, the London residence of Charles and Queen Camilla. This sparked a flurry of headlines in the British media, suggesting that a reconciliation was still possible.<\/p>\n

Harry's visit could therefore provide royal watchers with an opportunity to assess the significance of the reconciliation talks, and Hagan said the absence of a meeting would be a "very bad sign.".<\/p>\n

However, she said: "I think a reconciliation will happen. I'm sure it will happen. I've always said it will happen. It's just going to take time. I'm not saying we're going to see William and Harry walking hand in hand down the Mall anytime soon, but they will reconcile. I still think William won't ascend to the throne until he and Harry have at least spoken.".<\/p>\n

And she urged them to heal the rift during the king's lifetime: "It must be accelerated because we all know the king is getting older, time is moving inexorably forward, so they will have to put their affairs in order.".<\/p>\n

Prince Harry's police protection<\/h2>\n

Harry has been fighting to get his police protection back since it was stripped in 2020, but lost two court cases against the British government in London's High Court and has since appealed.<\/p>\n

His long-standing position was that it was unsafe to bring Meghan and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, to the UK without police bodyguards.<\/p>\n

As a result, Lilibet, who was born in California in 2021, has visited the UK only once, during the Queen's Jubilee in 2022, which coincided with her first birthday.<\/p>\n

The trip also marked Archie's only return to the UK since the couple flew to Canada in November 2019, before moving to America in March 2020. He was born in the UK in 2019 and spent the first months of his life there.<\/p>\n

In May 2025, Prince Harry told BBC News that without police protection he could not "imagine a world in which I would now be bringing my wife and children back to the UK.".<\/p>\n

At the time, he suggested the king was blocking his attempts to bring back police bodyguards: "I can only come to Britain safely if I am invited, and my father has a lot of power and scope for that.".<\/p>\n

\u00ab"Ultimately, this whole situation could have been resolved with his help, not by intervening, but by stepping back and letting the experts do what was necessary.".<\/p>\n

Pressure on Prince Harry's Invictus Games participants<\/h2>\n

The year 2026 has been challenging for Invictus after the Australian government cut funding to its foundation in the country in May.<\/p>\n

Last week, good news arrived for the organization: funding of AU$9 million (about US$6.5 million) over three years was renewed.<\/p>\n

Matt Keogh, the Australian government's Minister for Veterans Affairs, told 9Now that support for veterans in the country is being restructured under a new Veterans and Families Welfare Agency.<\/p>\n

\u00ab"As part of a transition period to ensure the continuity and reliability of support services for our veteran community," he said, "we are providing Invictus Australia with a further three years of funding.".<\/p>\n
