Over the weekend, two films made a splash, grossing hundreds of millions of dollars thanks to the vision of two relatively unknown YouTube content creators.<\/p>\n

The horror film "Backstage," directed by 20-year-old Kain Parsons, grossed $118 million worldwide. The film, which cost $10 million to make as a spinoff based on a series of YouTube shorts, achieved the biggest opening in A24 history and made Parsons the youngest director ever to hold the No. 1 spot at the box office, Deadline notes.<\/p>\n

A24's success mirrors that of another YouTube content creator. "Obsession," the brainchild of 26-year-old Curry Barker, was produced by Focus Features for approximately $750,000 and has grossed $150 million to date.<\/p>\n

According to Focus, ticket sales for "Obsession" have increased every weekend since its May 15 release, making it the first film to achieve such growth since "E.T." back in 1982.<\/p>\n

The success stories of the insurgent movements stand in stark contrast to the success of other, potential blockbusters of the past.<\/p>\n

This weekend, Disney's Star Wars franchise film, The Mandalorian and Grogu, saw its box office take fall 70%, landing it in third place behind Behind the Scenes and Whiplash.<\/p>\n

Comscore's head of market trends, Paul Dergarabedian, told Variety that this doesn't necessarily have to be a dark moment for old Hollywood.<\/p>\n

\u00ab"Time will tell whether this marks the beginning of a new era or a fundamental change in business, but this journey from YouTube content creators to the big screen should be viewed as complementary," he said. "It's a production process that didn't exist before.".<\/p>\n
