We gave Tom this role,&quot; the director said.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p> Spielberg later explained why the role ultimately didn&#039;t go to Selleck, and how Harrison Ford joined the iconic franchise.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p> Steven Spielberg said that during preparation for filming the movie <em>\u00abIndiana Jones\u00bb<\/em> and &quot;Once Upon a Time in Hollywood&quot; he and George Lucas almost chose <em>absolutely<\/em> a different approach to casting actors.<\/p>\n<p> In a new podcast interview <em>IMO<\/em> Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson (see below), the director says the lead role\u2014which helped make Harrison Ford an icon thanks to the film&#039;s release\u2014was <em>\u00abIndiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark\u00bb<\/em> in 1981 - Tom Selleck was originally supposed to play him.<\/p>\n<p> \u00ab&quot;George and I interviewed and auditioned for the role of Indiana Jones,&quot; Spielberg said on the podcast. &quot;That was the deciding factor. We both agreed that Tom Selleck should play Indiana Jones. He came in, auditioned, and it went well. Photo: Paramount\/Everett<\/p>\n<p> \u00abWe wanted to invite Tom, we gave Tom the role, and he, unknown to us, had an existing contract with the CBS television channel to participate in <em>the TV series &quot;Magnum, P.I.&quot;,<\/em> &quot;Spielberg recalled Selleck&#039;s leading role in the popular television series, which ran from 1980 to 1988.<\/p>\n<p> Shortly after the search for an actor to play Indy began, production on the television series began, further preventing Selleck from joining the film.<\/p>\n<p> \u00ab&quot;Tom&#039;s a great guy.
