Of course, this is easier said than done. This is true regardless of genre or topic, agrees several of Netflix's leading non-fiction creators, but they also say that the more complex or personal the discussion, the more difficult it is to get someone to speak candidly.

«"Trust was a huge factor," said Alexandria Stapleton. , director of the film "Sean Combs: The Reckoning"« , a four-part project examining the shocking allegations against Sean "Diddy" Combs and his Bad Boy empire. "It took a lot of informal conversations… a lot of listening. I mean, most of the people I interviewed for this film had spent most of their lives in isolation. After the falling out with Sean, they were isolated. They were silenced, and they really felt alone.".

More news from Deadline

The creators of 'The Beast in Me,' 'Death by Lightning,' 'Monster: The Ed Gein Story,' and 'Black Rabbit' detail their projects – Netflix and Deadline present: Visionaries

2026-2027 Awards Season Calendar: Oscars, Emmys, Grammys, Tonys, Guild Awards and More.

I Will Find You trailer: Sam Worthington goes on the run in a desperate search for his son.

Stapleton surprised even her fellow panelists at the Netflix & Deadline Present: The Visionaries event by revealing that she spent up to 12 hours conducting one-on-one interviews with participants to help them feel safe opening up about their painful pasts.

Stapleton was joined by Brad Falchuk of Famous Last Words and the film's director-producer Love on the Spectrum Sian O'Clery. Watch the recording of the discussion below and scroll down to see photos from the event.

Stapleton continued, "I'm a firm believer that trauma isn't necessarily a story, and I think a lot of other people, when they were talking about what happened, wanted to focus only on the worst parts and not go any further. For me, context is everything. I wanted them to understand that, as a victim, you have to understand what was good about them, what was good about the world, what you wanted, what made you happy… I think most people felt that was liberating.".

While Stapleton's goal was to get her interviewees to delve into their pasts, Falchuk's project asks them to reflect on something that hasn't yet happened: their deaths. Since the project's launch, Netflix has published Falchuk's conversations with Eric Dane and Jane Goodall after their deaths. Other conversations are already available, but Falchuk doesn't discuss who he spoke with, and no one will know that these people reflected on their lives and deaths until they're gone. This secrecy is just one way he gains their trust early on, allowing them to agree to such a vulnerable interview.

«"The most important thing, of course, is finding the right guest, someone who's truly ready for this adventure—that is, an honest and fearless account of their own death," Falchuk said. "So if you have the right person to talk to, it makes everything much, much easier. Also, I like to do a lot of prep work… It's about knowing the person well, making sure they're ready, and creating a very safe space for them where they know they can say whatever they want and won't be judged. There's nothing to worry about.".

Surprisingly, many of these principles apply to O'Clery, who attempts to create an authentic portrait of dating from the perspective of someone with autism. While dating can be exciting, it can also be nerve-wracking and vulnerable, especially when there are cameras filming it.

«"We only interview our actors once, at the very beginning. It's the only time we bring light into someone's home. The rest of the time, we're just a small crew... just filming in a way that hopefully captures everything as honestly and truthfully as possible, which is the most important thing for me and for us when creating the series.".

He also found that maximizing the participants' involvement in the process helped them calm down.

«"Before we even get to the point of inviting someone to be on the show, I visit them, meet them at home, or meet their family if they live with them," O'Clery said. "I think that's just our approach to everything. We're in this together. We're never an untouchable network that will sign a contract with them to do a project. I think we always work collaboratively.".

The Best of Deadline

Everything we know about Toy Story 5 so far.

Which Emily Henry books will be adapted for the screen? "The Happy Place," "The Book Lovers," and others.

Everything we know so far about the film adaptation of Emily Henry's Beach Read«

Subscribe to the Deadline newsletter.
