Kennedy Courage Award ceremony in Boston on Sunday, May 31, in part to support their friend Caroline Kennedy, who died just months after the death of her daughter, Tatiana Schlossberg.

While arriving at an event at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum on Sunday evening, Letterman and Lasko spoke with PEOPLE about how Caroline and her family are coping with the loss of the 35-year-old journalist and author, who died of terminal blood cancer in December.

Lasko, Caroline's friend, told PEOPLE that the family is feeling "as happy as can be.".

Letterman said that if he had to describe the Kennedy family in the five months since Tatiana's death, one word would come to mind: "Calm—and that's not surprising, given who they are and what they do," the comedian said. "I would say they're stable.".

Letterman and Lasko, who dated for more than two decades before marrying in 2009, attended Tatiana's funeral in New York City on January 5, along with Caroline, her husband Ed Schlossberg, and Tatiana's siblings, Rose and Jack Schlossberg. Other notables also attended the funeral, including former President Joe Biden and former Secretary of State John Kerry.

Tatyana was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, a blood cancer, shortly after giving birth to her second child with husband George Moran in 2024.

At the awards ceremony on Sunday, Caroline, 68, paid tribute to the work and life of her late daughter and paid tribute to George's parents, Garrett and Mary Moran, who were attending the event for the first time.

«"Most of all, we remember Tatiana, who served on the board of this library and personified everything my parents stood for in their wonderful, amazing, and all-too-short lives," she said, her voice shaking as she struggled to hold back tears.

The audience applauded Tatiana for almost 20 seconds, after which Carolina quietly said: «Thank you.».

Prince William (left) is greeted by Caroline Kennedy (right) and her children Jack and Tatiana Schlossberg at the John F.
