Evans and Xu found ways to pay homage to the past while forging their own path.<\/p>\n<p> \u00ab&quot;I think about Tim Curry&#039;s performance, but I don&#039;t let it dictate me,&quot; Evans explains, referring to his favorite actor who first played Frank on stage and in film. The actor describes his vision of the sexually charged mad scientist as a mixture of <em>\u00abThe Greatest Showman\u00bb<\/em> and &quot;Little Bo Peep.&quot; &quot;He&#039;s a creature of the night, but he&#039;s also a butterfly and a peacock,&quot; Evans explains. &quot;He wants to be heard, and he wants to be understood.&quot;.<\/p>\n<p> Meanwhile, Xu is expanding her understanding of what it means to be a &quot;typical&quot; girl-next-door. &quot;My body and I are becoming part of the legacy of Janet Weiss that came before me and will continue to come,&quot; she says. &quot;Twenty years from now, when the next revival happens, I wouldn&#039;t be surprised if Janet looks a lot more like me... I feel like I&#039;m creating wealth for future generations in my community.&quot;.<\/p>\n<p> Costumes play a crucial role for both actresses; Janet&#039;s transformation into a sexually liberated woman is conveyed through the evolution of her costumes, which Xu approached with particular care. &quot;Her journey isn&#039;t like a transformation from a prude to an attractive woman,&quot; she explains. &quot;There&#039;s something more animalistic about her desires. She&#039;s in control of them and has the power to choose.&quot;.<\/p>\n<p> When Janet finally accepts her body&#039;s needs, she strips down to a revealing outfit\u2014a moment Xu describes as an exploration of desire free from shame, rather than a cliched notion of what &quot;sexy&quot; might entail. &quot;I really fought for the jockstrap,&quot; she admits. &quot;She&#039;s wearing combat boots and a jockstrap; just these little Easter eggs that feel less traditionally feminine.&quot;. <\/p>\n<p> Luke Evans and Josh Rivera<\/p>\n<p> For his part, Evans says he arrives at Studio 54 an hour and 20 minutes before the show starts to begin the process of &quot;introducing&quot; Frank.<\/p>\n<p> \u00ab&quot;The first thing I do is strip completely naked, then put on double fishnet tights and a bondage harness,&quot; he explains, laughing. &quot;Calling them underwear is almost an insult because they barely cover anything.&quot; After that, there&#039;s 45 minutes of makeup, then a corset, jewelry, and a long wig. He insists on doing the final step himself: lacing Frank&#039;s stiletto boots.<\/p>\n<p> \u00ab&quot;Every step I take, I see myself disappearing and Frank appearing,&quot; he exclaims. &quot;Twenty minutes into the show, I&#039;m standing in front of the mirror in my dressing room, and there he is. I don&#039;t think I&#039;ve ever had the opportunity to completely lose myself in a character before, and I absolutely love it.&quot;.<\/p>\n<p> Ironically, Evans ends the evening by stripping Frank of his extravagant attire during the song &quot;I&#039;m Going Home.&quot; Faced with imminent death, the scientist slowly removes his eyelashes and wig, and wipes his makeup from his face as Evans&#039;s gentle voice echoes through the hall.<\/p>\n<p> \u00ab&quot;The song starts out as more of an explanation, but then it becomes incredibly emotional because he realizes it was all just a facade,&quot; the actor explains. &quot;He was hiding behind this image, but underneath it all, there was this vulnerable, lonely, devastated man who was realizing his loss.&quot; Evans even describes how there were gasps and laughter in the audience because they were so shocked to see the character so naked.<\/p>\n<p> \u00abIt\u2019s really powerful,\u201e he says. \u201cIt\u2019s a powerful moment for him, where he just says, \u00bbMy speeding train hit the wall, and I know this is the end, and I\u2019m sorry, but through my tears, I saw blue sky.\u2019 I saw it, and you didn\u2019t. It\u2019s beautiful. It\u2019s very profound for me.
