One study found that eating more plant foods can promote longevity. Another found that it can reduce the risk of constipation, and a third found that it can reduce the risk of stroke. However, not everything is rosy when it comes to plant-based eating, as it has been shown that eating large amounts of plant foods can expose you to toxic substances.

In the May issue of the magazine Food Control Researchers from the University of Parma in Italy and Cranfield University in the UK reported that plant-based foods and beverages contain far more mycotoxins than expected. They explained that mycotoxins are naturally occurring but toxic compounds produced by fungi.

To assess their prevalence, the team tested 212 plant-based meat substitutes (PMBAs) and plant-based beverages (PBBs) collected from UK grocery store shelves, including burgers, vegetarian chicken, vegan sausages, and oat, almond, and soy milks. They found that all of them contained at least one of 19 mycotoxins. Yes, 100% of them. Some even contained more than one.

What are mycotoxins?

Mycotoxins are toxic compounds produced by certain types of mold that can grow on crops such as grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds. They can form during food production, transportation, or storage, so small amounts are sometimes detected in foods. Although high levels of mycotoxins are associated with health risks, all products tested in this study contained substances at concentrations below current European Union safety limits.

According to the study, the most common mycotoxin was beauvericin, which was detected in all meat substitutes tested. Furthermore, the results obtained with oat milk are particularly alarming: nearly 95% of samples contained the toxin HT-2, a compound associated with damage to the immune system and gastrointestinal tract, and 90% of soy milk contained ochratoxin A, a compound classified as a probable human carcinogen.

See also: There's mold on your cheese—is it safe to eat?

The good news, the team reported in a statement to Phys.org, is that all the products they tested contained the substances at levels below EU recommended limits. However, they added that even at low concentrations, chronic exposure can lead to serious health consequences, especially if your diet is based solely on plant foods. In some cases, it can even cause liver or kidney damage, as well as cancer.

As for how these toxins ended up in plant-based foods, the team explained that they typically grow on raw materials often used in such meat substitutes, including seeds, beans, and grains, which can be exposed to mold during growth and storage.

«"Mycotoxins are naturally present in foods and cannot be completely avoided. Consumers should not be afraid or discouraged from consuming a wide variety of foods," said Andrea Patriarca, Senior Lecturer in Mycology at Cranfield University.

See also: The secret to feeding 10 billion people by 2050 may already be in your trash can.

«"However, the introduction of new food products to the market is a major concern, as there are currently no established regulations for monitoring mycotoxins," Patriarca added.

According to Patriarca, they are collaborating with various sectors of the food industry to implement mycotoxin management practices to reduce this risk and will use this data to improve food safety in the future. "Our goal," Patriarca added, "is to advise policymakers and raise awareness among vulnerable consumer groups.".

Read the original article on Food & Wine.

Key Findings A new study has found detectable levels of at least one mycotoxin in all 212 plant-based meat substitutes and plant-based beverages sampled from grocery stores…

[2

post-6900","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","hvn-theme-has-thumbnail
["GET
