This particle, so elusive that it's often called a "ghost particle," was detected by a neutrino detector located at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea and possessed far more energy than ever predicted for a particle of this type.

The discovery immediately demanded an explanation and generated much speculation. Now, several years after the initial discovery, we are finally seeing this debate develop into the publication of peer-reviewed scientific papers on the topic.

A few months ago, we read a study detailing one of the most widely held ideas: that neutrinos were produced by the explosion of a black hole. This concept is appealing, primarily because exploding black holes themselves are of great interest.

As mentioned, we've explored this idea before, but suffice it to say that it involves the explosive termination of primordial singularities that have existed since the beginning of time. So, take note.

illustration of blazar-quasar 2

Source: NASA

This new paper shifts the focus to the so-called "blazar" as a potential explanation.

A blazar is a type of active galactic nucleus (AGN), which is itself a supercluster of stars exhibiting significant luminosity across the electromagnetic spectrum, much of which cannot be explained by stellar emission. The non-stellar emission is thought to originate primarily from the accretion of matter by the supermassive black hole at the center.

In other words, when a black hole attracts matter and transports it beyond its event horizon, some of the energy contained in that matter is ejected outward. Because this rotating matter forms a disk, the path of least resistance for radiation is along the poles, resulting in radiation being directed in two directions perpendicular to the disk.

One such stream can outshine the entire Milky Way Galaxy by a thousand times, but it is highly directional, meaning that the recorded power will depend on the angle of the beam relative to the observer.

Blazar's illustration

This image shows the blazar's orientation relative to Earth. Source: NASA.

Objects of this type are usually called quasars. When the particle stream is directed toward Earth, allowing us to observe its full luminosity, such an object is called a blazar. A blazar directs the entire power of the quasar toward Earth, allowing us to see all its characteristics.

One of the peculiarities of the neutrino detection in 2023 was not only its power, which was tens of thousands of times greater than the energy achieved by the Large Hadron Collider, but also the fact that it occurred without significant electromagnetic radiation such as X-rays or gamma rays.

The researchers hypothesized the existence of a cluster of blazars that would influence each other's radiation; they found that such a cluster of interacting blazars could produce the observed neutrino energies, as well as a unique combination of energies.

The only problem is that the neutrino detection in 2023 is the only one of its kind (so far), which seems to indicate that the event that produced this particle must be relatively rare. However, the blazar would presumably continue to emit particles over time.

The discovery of this single particle was so far beyond expectations that scientists will likely need many more years to find an explanation. Even more challenging is their main task: figuring out how exactly nature created a particle that humanity could only produce using a particle accelerator with a circumference equal to that of planet Earth.

A new paper published in the Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics puts forward an intriguing theory: a previously unexplained neutrino could have been beamed down to Earth…

[2

post-7138","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","hvn-theme-has-thumbnail
["GET
