In the 1990s, the Scottish electronic duo Boards of Canada were often lumped in with their fellow extreme artists on Warp Records. At the time, few dared to call them "trip-hop," and perhaps they shouldn't have. But Boards of Canada's lazy breakbeats, pitch-bending synthesizers and samples, and dizzying atmosphere pointed in that direction. Even now, however, that term can seem too timeless\u2014too specific to the 1990s, especially for a duo whose best work has proven truly timeless.<\/p>\n
But look around: like skyrocketing gas prices and threats of nuclear war, trip-hop is back, and back in a big way. And not only are many of BoC's finest moments here\u2014from "Happy Cycling" on their 1999 EP Peel Sessions (later included on their 1998 debut album) Music Has the Right to Children<\/em> ) to "1969," one of Geogaddi's highlights from 2002\u2014sonically embodied the style in its best, faded, Technicolor form, but the term itself has recently gained renewed currency, with hipster DJs from Toronto to London dedicating their recent sets to it. They release music whenever they feel like it, while revealing very little about their personal lives and allowing the press to approach them. ahem<\/em> ). While their core approach fits in well with the recent trend, and despite the noisy anti-campaign the duo and their label Warp Records had previously waged, Inferno album<\/em> required about the same amount\/little artificial promotion as any other album, except Sade. It also works in about the same way as Sade: everything works, so nothing needs to be changed. So yes, this album\u2014the band's first studio album in 13 years\u2014sounds Very<\/em> in the style of the nineties (quite appropriate).<\/p>\n The most amazing aspects Inferno<\/em> \u2014 these are the parts that sound less like hazy glossolalia and more like a straightforward anthem. The jittery pulse of "Prophecy at 1420 MHz" recalls\u2014what is this?\u2014late Massive Attack: a piercing midrange riff, a flat snare drum, a processed, dystopian male voice, a strangely soothing sound.<\/p>\n But as the hazy escapism offered by Boards of Canada has morphed into a veritable electronic music industry, it's refreshing to remember that no one else can create such transparent lullabies. "Introit" opens the album perfectly, a half-minute composition with vintage synths from an obscure BBC science program. As for "You Retreat in Time and Space"\u2014hell, even the title is trip-hop, not to mention the slow drum beat, gently swell bassline, powerful, fuzzy keyboard part, and ornate string pads.<\/p>\n On "Father and Son," stern vocal passages become charmingly toffee\u2014poking fun at a company representative might be an old production trope, but the two once again turn Coldcut-style playfulness into a virtue. But much of it is also straightforwardly programmatic, as in "Into the Magic Land," where a tremolo-equipped guitar leads into a gray forest.
