Michael says they became close after Monroe saw photographs of Marlene Dietrich taken by Eva in 1952.

Michael notes that Dietrich was actually the first celebrity Eva worked with, capturing candid shots of the actress from film "The Shanghai Empress"« while recording the songs she made famous during World War II.

«"She wanted a working woman to do her job in the studio, recording music. Then, later that year, Marilyn Monroe and Eva happened to be at the same party. It was hosted by John Huston, the film director, and Eva was introduced to Marilyn Monroe," he says of his grandmother, who died on January 4, 2012, at the age of 99.

Marilyn Monroe for Eve Arnold, 1955. She would have turned 100 on Monday, June 1.

Eva noticed Monroe's bravado, but she was focused on photojournalism and felt a certain reluctance to become too immersed in Hollywood life. "There was a certain energy about Monroe that really drew Eva to her. She had a magnetism that constantly drew her back," he shares.

Eva and Monroe first began working together in 1955, during a photo shoot at a playground on Long Island, New York. These photos also made it into Esquire magazine . Eva captured Monroe posing on a playground, looking warm yet thoughtful in the photos, which also feature her reading «Ulysses» James Joyce.

Marilyn Monroe reading Ulysses. Eva thought it was a great opportunity to break the stereotype of Monroe as a dumb blonde, because in fact, Monroe was an avid reader and had a huge library," says Michael.

The photo shoot became "the beginning of a strong friendship" between the two women, who were just beginning their careers in their respective fields. "As Eva described it, they were both newcomers but loved to experiment. Monroe would come up with different scenarios, and Eva would explain how Monroe was able to reveal different facets of her personality because she was an actress, but also had an amazing talent behind the camera," says Michael.

He adds: "Eva wanted to show something more sincere, more real, something that reflected her essence. And I think that's why Monroe chose her, because she saw what Dietrich had done and she wanted her fans to see a different side of her than what had been shown before.".

This feeling of comfort later prompted Monroe to turn to Eva during the filming of the movie «The Misfits» at the end of 1960.

Marilyn Monroe rehearsing for the film "The Misfits," 1960. Her marriage to Arthur Miller was falling apart. She was exhausted. She'd starred in a string of films, one after another, and, you could say, achieved success. She was the biggest star in the world, but she still wasn't satisfied," Michael explains.

He adds: "She thought it would make her happy, that it would bring her satisfaction, but once she got there, she realized it wasn't what she expected, and she shared her feelings with Eva. So I think Eva's maternal instincts came into play, and she really cared about her.".

Book "Marilyn Monroe 100: The Official Centenary Publication"« from ACC Art Books is now available in all bookstores.
