His work on the album 21st Century Schizoid Man<\/em> was included in Far Out magazine's list of the 10 best drum solos of all time.<\/p>\n \u00ab"With their Duke Ellington-inspired free jazz, you'll quickly understand why King Crimson is considered by some to be the definitive progressive rock band," wrote Far Out Magazine. "Giles's drumming is constantly changing, shifting time signatures and tempos, clearly marking him out as one of the most underrated drummers of all time.".<\/p>\n \u00ab"The instrumental middle section of the song, known as 'Mirrors,' is where he really comes into his own. Like a mountain of amphetamine, he definitely takes the song down its schizoid path.".<\/p>\n Giles eventually left King Crimson in 1970, a decision he said was driven by the need to explore and develop new ideas.<\/p>\n \u00ab"I did think about pursuing what's called a 'progressive rock' style of drumming, but I soon decided to stop and say, 'Enough!'" he told The Strange Brew.<\/p>\n \u00abI would have had to join another progressive band and go on tour to continue developing progressive drums, whatever they were, but I needed to explore and develop new ideas for a much broader approach to drumming and percussion so that they became an equal and integral part of my own compositions.\u00bb.<\/p>\n Renowned Rush drummer Neil Peart called Giles a "very important" influence on his career.<\/p>\n \u00ab"Soon there were other brave and experienced rock drummers like John Bonham, Michael Giles (King Crimson's first drummer and a huge influence on me), Bill Bruford of Yes, his successor Alan White, Phil Collins of Genesis, and of course Billy Cobham and Steve Gadd, who must have influenced every drummer in those days," Peart said.<\/p>\n Kanye West later sampled this song on his album.
