Baiae is an ancient Roman city located northwest of Naples. What sets this place apart from other ancient Roman cities is that it was home to many emperors, including Julius Caesar. The city, submerged by volcanic vents, was discovered in 1940 by Raimondo Boucher, an Italian Air Force pilot. The History of the Sunken City of Baiae <\/p>\n

The first settlement in Baiae dates back to 3000 BC. Although the city was founded around the second century, it achieved its true glory during the reign of Emperor Augustus. Augustus connected all the luxurious villas in the area with a road, and the houses were equipped with large thermal baths. Augustus' successors\u2014Nero, Hadrian, and Alexander Severus\u2014continued to expand and develop the city of Baiae, building vast villas and entertainment centers over the years.<\/p>\n

As can be seen from this, Baiae eventually became a city where the Roman elite lived and where unlimited parties were held. Situated above natural volcanic vents, the city was particularly famous for its therapeutic hot springs. It is known that the most famous figures of antiquity, such as Nero, Cicero, and Caesar, frequently visited Baiae, and many of them even built summer villas there.<\/p>\n

This glamorous life in Baiae, also known as "Caesar's City" and considered the ancient Roman equivalent of Las Vegas, came to an end with the sack of the city in the 8th century. By 1500, the city was gradually abandoned due to its vulnerability to volcanic eruptions and malaria epidemics. Soon after its abandonment, the water level slowly rose due to volcanic vents, and Baiae disappeared into the shallows of the bay.<\/p>\n

The sunken city was first spotted by an Italian pilot flying at low altitude. <\/h2>\n

In the 19th century, ancient Roman ruins were occasionally discovered in the area. In the 1920s, during dredging operations off the coast of Pozzuoli, the discovery of marble statues attracted the attention of then-Italian leader Benito Mussolini, who demanded the evacuation of the area. The actual discovery of the city occurred in 1940. Flying low over the Portus Julius harbor, Italian Air Force pilot Raimondo Boucher discovered Baiae, which he described as a "strange ghost town.".<\/p>\n

Aerial photographs taken by Boucher, who is also a freediver, showed the Bayou with extraordinary clarity. The fact that the water depth that day was 1.5 meters and the sea was so clear revealed a world previously unknown.<\/p>\n

Although excavations of the sunken city of Baiae and its surroundings began in 1959, the main work was completed in the early 1980s. During these excavations, the Nymphaeum\u2014a chamber built by Emperor Claudius and filled with marble statues\u2014was discovered. Since then, archaeologists have discovered dozens of historical artifacts.<\/p>\n

Baths, fountains, luxurious houses, mosaics, and statues\u2014to name just a few\u2026 However, among the artifacts discovered is a highly valuable inscription: L Pisonis\u2026 This inscription states that Piso planned to assassinate his close friend, Emperor Nero, at his summer villa in Baiae. Although Piso believed he would thereby become emperor, Nero canceled his visit to Baiae after learning of the assassination plan.<\/p>\n

Baiae became an important tourist destination after archaeological excavations. <\/h2>\n

Located in the Gulf of Naples, Baiae has become an important tourist destination following archaeological excavations. Thousands of tourists visit the area each year to see the sunken city of Baiae. Glass-bottom boat tours are available, and the magical underwater city can be explored with the help of diving companies.<\/p>\n

Some visitors explore the sunken city while snorkeling. These tours reveal villas of noble Roman families, baths, mosaics, statues, and many other works of art. Although the walls of some buildings have collapsed, the rooms are still visible. Mosaic floors in many rooms remain to this day.<\/p>\n

Before the construction of the Pantheon, the Temple of Mercury boasted the largest dome in the world\u201421.5 meters. The temple, with the oldest known concrete dome, dates back to 3000 BC. It was built in the first century using tuff blocks.<\/p>\n

The Temple of Diana, with its enormous dome, now half-collapsed, was used as a thermal bath during ancient Roman times. The temple walls are decorated with friezes depicting hunting scenes.<\/p>\n

Temple of Venus <\/h3>\n

Temple of Venus, 3rd century BC. It was built in 46 BC by Julius Caesar in honor of the Roman goddess Venus. The building, severely damaged by fire in 80 AD, was rebuilt by Domitian and restored by Trajan in 113 AD. Three columns, still standing, include fragments of this last restoration.<\/p>\n
