Photo: Michelle Crowe\/CBS News via Getty.<\/p>\n<p> Pelley, 68, was sacked on Tuesday after a bitter row with the show&#039;s new executive producer, Nick Bilton.<\/p>\n<p> In a stunning resignation letter obtained by PEOPLE, Bilton accused Pelley of &quot;ambush,&quot; &quot;hostility,&quot; and &quot;inappropriate behavior.&quot;.<\/p>\n<p> \u00ab&quot;Yesterday you disrupted my first staff meeting to disparage me, my qualifications, and my intentions with astonishing impoliteness and contempt,&quot; Bilton&#039;s letter reads, in part.<\/p>\n<p> According to data <em>The New York Times<\/em> \u0438 <em>The Guardian<\/em> , Before his dismissal, Pelley clashed with Bilton at a tense meeting in the editorial office of the program &quot;\u00ab <em>60 minutes&quot;\u00bb<\/em> . During the meeting, Pelley accused CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss of &quot;killing&quot; the program.\u00ab <em>60 minutes<\/em> \u00bb&quot;, as reported by numerous sources. According to the data <em>The New York Times<\/em> , he allegedly told Bilton that Weiss &quot;has no qualifications for this job; you have little qualifications for this job.&quot;.<\/p>\n<p> Following his firing, Pelley released a statement accusing CBS News executives of trying to gain support for the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p> \u00ab&quot;When my colleagues and I took over the program, our responsibility was to vigorously evolve into a new era of media technology while maintaining the values our audiences have come to expect,&quot; Pelley wrote in a statement obtained by PEOPLE. &quot;Now our network&#039;s new owner is jettisoning that narrative, seemingly to please the Trump administration. This is terribly wasteful.&quot;.<\/p>\n<p> He continued: \u00abLast month the program \u00ab <em>60 minutes&quot;\u00bb<\/em> &quot;lost its original essence when our entire senior management and two of our best correspondents were brutally fired without cause. Good people were silenced because they stood up for our audience. They stood up for justice against the forces of political bias; they stood up for professionalism against chaos.&quot;.<\/p>\n<p> Pelley&#039;s dismissal was not the first in recent weeks. May 28 program <em>\u00ab60 Minutes\u00bb<\/em> parted ways with journalists Cecilia Vega and Sharyn Alfonsi. Weiss and CBS News President Tom Cibrowski also fired executive producer Tanya Smith, replacing her with Bilton, a technology journalist.<\/p>\n<p> A source close to CBS News executives told PEOPLE on June 1 that &quot;Bari and Nick tried to reach Scott for a private conversation last week.
