Derek Hough and Hayley Erbert are bringing their love life to the big screen.
The couple appeared on Friday's episode of the program «Good Morning, America» , June 5, to present his new documentary «Symphony of Dance» , which will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on Sunday, June 7. Host Michael Strahan noted that the episode marked the couple's "first live television interview" about Herbert's health issues in December 2023.
«"How are you feeling right now?" Strahan asked Erbert, to which Erbert replied, "I'm doing great. I feel very healthy. I just feel great. And we had a daughter five months ago, so I'm over the moon.".
Hoag, for his part, said it was "incredible" to watch his and Erbert's relationship over the past few years be reflected in the film. "This documentary really captures our real experiences and her return to the stage," he said. "But watching her become a mother is the best thing.".
Erbert added: "It's incredible that it's only been two and a half years. It feels like an eternity, but at the same time, it was just yesterday. And we've truly come a long way, and I'm very proud of both of us.".
In December 2023, Erbert was rushed to the hospital while performing on tour. «Symphony of Dance» Hoof underwent an emergency craniectomy to treat a cranial hematoma. Erbert also underwent a second operation to replace the portion of her skull removed during the craniectomy.
Erbert made a triumphant return to the show's stage «Dancing with the Stars» in 2024, performing alongside Hoag in a special tribute number during Season 33. In June 2025, the couple announced they were expecting their first child, and in December of that year, their daughter, Everly, was born.
On air GMA programs Hoag said he and Erbert never planned to make a documentary, but were inspired to do so after director Jason Berg captured footage of them rehearsing for the opening ceremony. DWTS .
«It really gives you a sense of how amazing this woman is, and I mean that completely seriously, seeing her strength, her resilience,» Hoag said of the film. «People ask, „Were you strong for her?“ And I’m like, „No, no, no. She was strong for all of us.“ She was there smiling, hooked up to tubes and wires in the hospital, and she had this determination, this, „I’m going to dance again. I’m going to be on that dance floor again.“ And it defied all odds.».
Strahan noted that doctors warned Erbert about potential challenges with walking and dancing after her illnesses, but she managed to do both. "[Derek] always says I'm very stubborn, and frankly, I am. And that's when my stubbornness turned out to be helpful, because I said to myself, 'No, I'm going to dance. I'm going to dance again. I'm going to get on stage,'" Erbert said. "And I was back on stage four months after brain surgery. Maybe I'm a little crazy, but I was determined. I had a clear goal, and I said to myself, 'I'm going to do this.'".
Hoag recalled feeling "resentment" toward dance after Erbert's health problems, as the incident occurred during their performance together. "She was so strong, she held my face and said, 'Honey, trust me. I can do this. We can do this.' And again, I should have been there for her, but she was really there for all of us in the most incredible way," he said. "And to see her on that stage, to hear the audience, to hear the emotions that were there—which you'll see in the documentary, throughout the process and throughout this journey—it was incredible.".
At the end of the interview, Hoag expressed how excited he was that their daughter would one day see the documentary. "What I love more than anything is the opportunity to show her this one day and show her how awesome her mom is. I just can't wait," he enthused.
