Who doesn't start humming "Summer Nights" when they hear it? It doesn't matter what generation you belong to; everyone knows it. «Grease» . This is one of the films that helped John Travolta get out of the class in the sitcom "« Welcome back, Kotter."» and become a star. Even though the film was released in 1978, I love that you can still watch it with a Paramount+ subscription.
Travolta has attracted a lot of attention by indulging in nostalgia. I was one of many who enjoyed watching him as Danny Zuko at the Hollywood Bowl screening of the film and its songs. But he's not the only actor from "Grease"« , who's been reminiscing lately. Barry Pearl, who played the youngest of the T-Birds, Doody, shared a funny, unfortunate line that, fortunately, made it into the beloved musical. He recounts the moment in an interview with ReMind. He recalls:
When we're sitting in the stands, before we sing "Summer Nights," we make fun of Tom Chisum, Lorenzo Lamas' character. He runs in his football uniform, sticks his foot into his helmet, and we say, "Chisum, you really got that foot in there that time!"«
When the actors from "Grease"« Sharing moments from the set always brings me immense joy, especially considering many of them have passed away. For example, Olivia Newton-John died in 2022 at the age of 73. Fortunately, she and Travolta were able to reunite in their original costumes before her death. Although Newton-John didn't participate in the bleachers scene, it's still interesting to hear stories about this classic moment that we haven't heard before.
The actor recounts how his Italian co-star Michael Tucci used phrases like "you're a real bore" when putting someone down. This impressed Perl, who explains that the expression is used to describe someone who's a bore. And since he was playing an Italian character, he recalls enjoying using similar phrases his co-star used. He says:
I really enjoyed it, and at that point, because we improvised a lot in a lot of the scenes, when it came time to make fun of Tom Chisum, I wanted to call him, "You're a real jerk," or "Hey, jerk," and then Michael actually said, "What a jerk.".
It's no wonder actors still feel sentimental. That's exactly how Pearl feels when he recalls how he caught himself thinking he was about to say "gavon," and then blurted out something else. Who would have thought that unfortunate line would end up in the film? He certainly didn't. The actor explains:
At that moment, the very word "G" burst out of my mouth. So I said, "Gumdrops, dude." It's not an insult, it's nothing! And that's exactly the shot they showed in the movie.
The relaxed, friendly atmosphere between the actors is one of the many reasons why the film remains a classic and one of the best films of the 1970s. It is so beloved that it spawned a prequel comedy series. «Rise of the Pink Ladies» , a TV musical starring Julianne Hough and Aaron Tveit, and even an Indigenous language interpretation – a stage musical called «Bear fat» .
No one is ready to forget this classic musical, nor should they. It's a film that will be passed down from generation to generation.
