When Shawn Carter, aka Jay-Z, When he returns to the stage, first at the Roots Picnic festival this weekend and then for three nights at Yankee Stadium in July, the air will be filled with more than just his voice.
Some of the greatest beats in hip-hop history will be heard on stage, from DJ Premier's work on the album Reasonable Doubt before Kanye West's production work on The Blueprint — accompanied by Jay's group.
Hov's ability to create music, as well as his versatility in working with different regional sounds and changing trends, are key components of his remarkable catalog.
Over his thirty-year career, he has built fruitful working relationships with many of rap's leading producers, from lesser-known legends like Bink! and Ski to established hitmakers like Timbaland and The Neptunes.

But who has the most classic work with Jay, and how do you measure quality versus quantity? We looked at ten beatmakers who have made the most significant contributions to Jay-Z's discography to evaluate their work with the Brooklyn MC and choose one producer as the best of the best.

After Jay-Z and the late Queens producer and executive Irving Lorenzo Jr. built their empires—Roc-A-Fella and Murder, Inc.—their paths largely diverged.
But they played a vital role in each other's careers from the very beginning. The 1995 song "Time To Build," written by the largely forgotten rapper Mic Geronimo, features three future superstars: Jay-Z, DMX, and Ja Rule.
A year later, DJ Irv—as he was then known—looped a calm Isaac Hayes sample for «Can I Live,» one of the album’s most striking tracks. Reasonable Doubt . Then, in 1998, he created the energetic club track for Ja Rule's first Top 40 hit as a lead artist, "Can I Get A...," which also marked Ja Rule's national debut.

Roosevelt "Bink Dawg" Harrell III didn't become a household name like Kanye West or Just Blaze, but he was part of the trio that updated the Roc-A-Fella sound in the early 2000s with sped-up soul samples and produced some of Jay's best music.
All three producers came to the company through the same path: first working on Beanie Sigel's debut album «The Truth» , which included the Binks-produced collaboration with Jay-Z, "Raw & Uncut," then on «The Dynasty» and included even more tracks in «The Blueprint» . The songs he produced laid the foundation for the influential soul-beat style (something Binks was not shy about highlighting). His beats were always distinguished by high, piercing drums and melodic quality.
Bink eventually scored a slew of hits elsewhere, including Mr. Cheeks' "Lights, Camera, Action!" and Drake and J. Cole's "Jodeci Freestyle.".

Kassim "Swizz Beatz" Dean was still a teenager when his uncles, co-founders of Ruff Ryders Entertainment, allowed him to create beats for the label's top star, DMX.
This quickly led to his wild, improvisational track for the Jay-Z and X collaboration "Money, Cash, Hoes." And even after becoming a wealthy entrepreneur, art collector, and influential figure in the music industry, Swizz retained his indomitable drive, with some of the most wonderfully unpretentious hits on Jay-Z's post-retirement albums, including "On to the Next One" and the standout track "Welcome to the Jungle."« from the album Watch the Throne .

In 2003, Jay-Z famously said, "Honestly, I wanna rhyme like Common Sense," but he had just begun recording occasionally with Ernest Dion Wilson, the veteran Chicago producer who had worked on Common's early albums.
Several of Jay's albums have featured no auto-producer, often collaborating with his protégés Kanye West or Jermaine Dupri, while occasionally releasing solo tracks like the acclaimed "DOA (Death of Autotune)".
But the real surprise was that No ID became the first and only person to produce every track on a Jay-Z album, making creative use of samples and inspiring Jay-Z to be unprecedentedly candid in album 4:44 2017.

Before Jay-Z became friends with Coldplay's Chris Martin, one of his most fruitful musical partnerships was with Chris "DJ Premier" Martin.
Preemo was already recognized as one of hip-hop's greatest producers for his work with Gang Starr, Nas, and Biggie when he gave Jay-Z a major boost by producing three tracks on the album. Reasonable Doubt .
Every time Preemo and Jiggaman got together, it was like a historic event; boom-bap beats with chopped hooks were the cornerstone of Jay's first four albums, but we haven't heard any new collaborations from the duo since the '90s.
In 2017, Premier told Genius that Jay had originally planned to record The Black Album in 2000, using only Premier beats. Moreover, in one magazine article from early 2003, Preemo was still listed as one of the album's star producers, despite not ultimately being included.

North Carolina native David "Ski-Bitz" Willis found himself in New York City just in time to work on such mid-90s classics as «Reasonable Doubt» и «Uptown Saturday Night» Camp Lo group.
In fact, Ski Beatz's smooth piano loops and rhythmic drums arguably became Jay-Z's signature tune in the first couple of years of his career, gracing several early singles like "In My Lifetime," "Dead Presidents," "Feelin' It," and "Who You Wit." Jay-Z continued to expand his catalog with the help of other producers, but Ski Beatz was at the forefront, laying the foundation for some of the classics.

Tim "Timbaland" Mosley's smooth future-funk first made its mark on the charts thanks to R&B hits from Ginwine and Aaliyah.
But Jay-Z was the first New York rapper to use Timbo's sound in a purely rap composition, on 1998's "Jigga What, Jigga Who.".
After all, almost every rap superstar wanted a beat from Timbaland, but Jay's fast tempo never sounded as cool as when paired with Tim's signature triplet hi-hats.
Timbaland remained a sought-after collaborator on Jay's later work—and even when those records didn't achieve much success, the instinct that brought them together never faded.

Justin "Just Blaze" Smith's crashing cymbals, echoing drums, thunderous horns, and piercing vocal samples blast out of the speakers, while Jay-Z's laid-back delivery and dry humor create a surprisingly perfect complement to this over-the-top sound.
Because Just Blaze once ran Baseline Studios, where Jay-Z recorded for years, he became an integral part of the Roc-A-Fella team—the guy who could craft an album's highlight even when bigger names were brought in to record a single.
Take 2003's "Public Service Announcement," for example—a chorus-less interlude that Jay-Z has arguably performed live more often than any other song in his catalog. Even when a popular Just Blaze track is released as a collaboration with another artist, like Cam'ron's "Oh Boy," we can't help but wonder what Hov would have done with that beat.

The Virginia Beach duo of Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo were just starting to conquer the charts with a history-making hit parade when they created one of Jay's most memorable club hits, "I Just Wanna Love U (Give It To Me)," backed by Skateboard P's signature falsetto vocals.
They may never have surpassed that first Jay-Z track, but dig deeper than Jay's bubbly, Neptunes-produced singles like "Change Clothes," and you'll find more significant album tracks like "Allure." Williams remained in Hov's inner circle, with or without Hugo, for decades, working on a total of nine Jay-Z albums, more than any other producer.

Kanye West has soured relationships with many of his colleagues in recent years and made shockingly insensitive comments about Jay-Z's children in 2025, so it's highly unlikely we'll see a reunion of the duo that created Watch the Throne, in the near future.
But the "chipmunk soul" sound that West helped popularize as a producer for Roc-A-Fella laid the foundation for his own career as a superstar rapper, and together with Jay, he created some of rap's most acclaimed albums.
Their creative collaborations are among the greatest in the genre, and Watch the Throne album confirmed this. And while Ye may not have produced many of these songs, his influence is felt throughout.
