In a Siberian cave, archaeologists have discovered a 40,000-year-old bracelet made by a member of an extinct human species.

The bracelet was found in Denisova Cave in Siberia, near Russia's border with China and Mongolia. The cave was once home to an extinct species of humans known as the Denisovans, who lived there as far back as 41,000 years ago.

Denisova Cave is located in the Altai Mountains, on the banks of the Anuy River, approximately 150 kilometers south of the Russian city of Barnaul. The cave is known for its numerous paleontological finds, including the remains of extinct animals such as the woolly mammoth, sixty-six different species of mammals, and fifty different species of birds. In 2000, archaeologists also discovered a human tooth in the cave, belonging to a young man. Later, in 2008, they found a bracelet along with a finger bone from a Denisovan man, dubbed "Woman X." Several other artifacts dating back 125,000 years were also discovered. The average annual temperature in the cave is 0°C, creating ideal conditions for preserving the DNA of these prehistoric remains.

Denisovans are a Stone Age group whose last common ancestor with Neanderthals existed approximately one million years ago. They ranged from Siberia to Southeast Asia.

Denisovans and Neanderthals are considered related groups whose human lineage diverged from modern humans approximately 600,000 years ago. Further analysis of mitochondrial DNA also revealed that their species arose as a result of early migrations of Homo Erectus out of Africa. They lived among the ancestors of modern humans and interbred with them. About 3-5 percent of the DNA of Melanesians and Australian Aborigines is derived from Denisovan DNA.

What makes this bracelet unique is that the skills required to make it are believed to have only emerged during the Neolithic period, which began around 10,000 BC. The drilling, machining, and polishing techniques used to make the bracelet were not used anywhere else in the world at the time.

When archaeologists first discovered the bracelet, they assumed it belonged to an advanced form of modern humans, but soon realized it belonged to Denisovans. They believed that whoever made the bracelet mastered techniques including "...drilling with tools, boring, grinding, and polishing leather and hides of varying degrees of tanning," which were not previously considered characteristic of the Paleolithic. Another interesting fact is that the scientists discovered that the hole in the bracelet was drilled at high speeds and had minimal vibrations.

The bracelet is believed to have had symbolic significance for the Denisovans, as the material it was made from could only be found 200 kilometers from the cave.

The bracelet is made of chlorite. However, chlorite was not found anywhere near the cave and is believed to have been brought from as far as 200 kilometers away. This meant it was considered a valuable material at the time. It is a finely polished green stone, likely worn by a woman or child of noble birth. According to Anatoly Derevyanko, director of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography in Novosibirsk, "In bright sunlight, the bracelet reflects the sun's rays," and "at night, by the fire, it glows a deep green.".
