Jay-Z's "Roots Picnic" freestyle has people revisiting his comments on the rap controversy.

Jay-Z's "Roots Picnic" freestyle prompted some to recall comments he made earlier this year regarding rap conflicts.

During his performance on Saturday (May 30), Hov performed a scathing freestyle that appeared to take aim at Drake, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj and other artists.

However, some critics point to comments Jay-Z made in his recent interview with GQ, where he questioned whether rap battles still play a positive role in hip-hop.

«"Jay Z said he didn't like rap battles, then got mad when he came on stage and dropped a four-minute diss rap about Drake?" DJ Akademiks wrote on X. "No... Iceman really pisses people off.".

«"Jay Z did an interview with GQ a month ago, ranting about how the culture doesn't need battle rap. What does he look like now? [crying face emoji]," another user wrote.

«"I always thought the GQ interview was complete bullshit and that Jay-Z was just throwing Drake a bone, hoping he wouldn't react. And I'm glad he immediately proved at the first opportunity that he was blatantly lying throughout the entire interview," another person added.

«"Drake said, 'What kind of person are you, you're average?' (to Kendrick). Jay-Z has always been a prime target since the Super Bowl. All that bullshit Jay-Z said in his GQ interview about not being interested in a rap battle was a lie, and Drake exposed it," another user added.

When asked about the upcoming 2024 battle between Kendrick Lamar and Drake, Jay-Z told Fraser Tharpe, "We love the hype and I love the rivalry, but there's so much negativity around it these days that you almost wish it didn't happen.".

Jay-Z also objected to family members being targeted during feuds: "It's going too far. People's children are getting dragged into it. I don't like that," he said. "I think we can achieve the same thing, when it comes to musical feuds, through collaboration rather than by completely cutting ties.".

«"It takes up so much oxygen. It's like trying to destroy people's lives. I don't know if it's worth it," he said elsewhere in the interview, then added, "I think I'll say this—I don't know if it's worth fighting for people's rights anymore.".

Jay-Z also acknowledged that his stance may come as a surprise given his own history with Nas.

«"I hate that I have this point of view. Yeah, I hate it. Because I know how it sounds. It's just how I think," he said. He later added, "I realize it's a little hypocritical, considering how many battles I've been through and the nature of 'Super Ugly.' It takes some growing up to get to that point, because I've done that shit too!"»

The interview also addressed the criticism Jay-Z faced for choosing Kendrick Lamar as his Super Bowl halftime performer. Hov dismissed suggestions that the choice reflected an anti-Drake stance.

«"I chose the guy who had amazing "I think it was the right choice," he said. "What do I care about these two guys fighting? What does it have to do with me? Go ahead, argue.".

He also dismissed conspiracy theories surrounding his involvement in the Kendrick-Drake feud, stating, "They're dragging everyone into this, like everyone's part of a conspiracy to undermine Drake, I guess. But, man, what the fuck? I'm fucking Jay-Z! [laughs] No disrespect to him. I'm fucking Hov. Respect.".

Jay-Z's "Roots Picnic" freestyle on Saturday included a segment seemingly directed at Drake, who recently mentioned Jay-Z on his new album. «Iceman» .

« A rapper can't be my enemy »"," Jay-Z rapped.« Game over/Man, I'm 10 points ahead/Wrong chart, champ, you need to look up again/Niggas look at HOV with admiration/I never looked at them ».

Another section appeared to be about Ye, who previously made controversial statements about Jay-Z's children and later apologized.

« You ever heard of a prodigy? My kids is one of them/Don't you niggas have no shame/You really tryna piss me off? I'll piss you off (stab)/Ask Una how I play »"," Hov read.

Jay-Z also appeared to mention Nicki Minaj and her husband Kenneth "Zu" Petty.

» This lady's at it again, seems to be in love with them/Her Ken can't even... pick his own child... there are too many/A rapper can't be my opponent, I got MAGA Republicans/These attacks are coming from the very top of government, good luck to them «" he rapped.
