The hero in question is Boston Brand, also known as Deadman. In life, Brand was a circus acrobat and a bit of an arrogant character who was killed for unknown reasons. However, the goddess of karma and balance, Rama Kushna, gave him a second chance at redemption (if not life).

In classic DC Deadman comics, Boston Brand meted out justice by possessing people. However, Deadman #1 by W. Maxwell Prince and Martin Morazzo reimagines the poltergeist. Besides slightly tweaking Brand's abilities, the new series offers him a new job: assisting other souls as a sort of supernatural advisor/guardian.
Why is Deadman now a supernatural consultant?
In the opening scenes of Deadman #1, Boston Brand is hanging around a hospital, taking on several cases. One involves instilling the fear of hell in a villain who is given the chance to be reborn as a better man. In another, he helps a woman find peace after her spirit becomes stranded after her body dies. He also prevents the spirit of a teenage girl destined for a miraculous recovery from leaving her body before her death. Even outside of work, he spends more time communing with troubled ghosts and bringing them peace than battling supernatural threats.

This offers more variety than the stories DC typically tells about Deadman. However, it also sheds new light on the nature of Boston Brand's work. This new work becomes more understandable given that his ghostly status is nominally due to an Eastern goddess. Although Rama Kushna is a fictional deity, her name, appearance, and sphere of influence allude to Hinduism. Given this, it's logical to assume that Deadman is as dedicated to protecting spiritual well-being as he is to saving lives.

This difference manifests itself in a more dynamic form near the end of the first issue of the Deadman comic. It is here that, while seeking the just death of one man, Boston discovers a monster that devours souls rather than steals them. This sets the stage for the series' conflict and introduces a new threat that could actually endanger Boston Brand's life.
