Disney is rumored to be developing a live-action Pocahontas film.
According to insider MyTimeToShineHello on X (formerly Twitter), Disney is developing a full-length Pocahontas film. The insider shared the news on May 29, 2026, writing, "Disney is developing a full-length Pocahontas film.".
At the time of writing, Disney has not officially confirmed this report.
The original animated film "Pocahontas" was released in 1995 and grossed $346 million worldwide (according to Box Office Mojo). The film was produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and featured the voices of Irene Bedard and Mel Gibson.
The 1995 film won two Oscars: Best Original Score for a Musical or Comedy and Best Original Song for "Colors of the Wind." It also won an Annie Award for Best Animated Feature. The soundtrack reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart for the week of July 22, 1995.
However, a live-action adaptation could face significant challenges given the film's controversial history. In 2023, The New York Times reported that Disney appeared to downplay the film's significance and showed no interest in remaking it. The publication cited the film's subject matter and the historical controversies surrounding it as key reasons for the studio's hesitation.
The original film reportedly took significant creative liberties with Pocahontas's real life, sparking criticism for historical inaccuracies. Pocahontas was around 10 or 11 years old when John Smith arrived in 1607, not a young girl (according to the NY Times). Several people also noted that there is no evidence of a romantic relationship between the two. Despite this, the portrayal of Pocahontas as a strong and independent heroine apparently influenced later Disney films such as Mulan and Frozen.
