The holiday song stormed to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the month of June 5, 2021. It became not only a summer hit but also the biggest song of the year, topping the chart for 10 weeks and finishing as the top song of the summer.

"Butter" became BTS's fourth Hot 100 number-one hit in exactly nine months, since their debut, "Dynamite," released on September 5, 2020. The group followed that up with "Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)," featuring Jawsh 685 and Jason Derulo, in October of that year, and "Life Goes On" in December of that year. BTS achieved the fastest four No. 1s among groups since the Jackson 5 in 1970.
Since then, BTS have added three more Hot 100 hits, including two in 2021: "Permission to Dance" in July (breaking the triumph of "Butter") and "My Universe" with Coldplay in October. By the time of the latter's triumph, the group had achieved six number-one hits on the chart in just over a year and a month. This marked the fastest time the group achieved six number-one hits since The Beatles held the position for a year and two weeks from 1964 to 1966.
In April of this year, BTS's song "Swim" quickly shot to number one on the Hot 100 chart. At the same time, their debut album ARIRANG reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart. ARIRANG's world tour kicked off on April 10, propelling the band to the top of the Billboard Boxscore chart for April's top tours.
In the same interview Billboard In 2021, as BTS was building anticipation for their live debut of "Butter" at that year's Billboard Music Awards, band member Suga reflected on the septet's 2013 debut and its future. "Eight years seems like a pretty short time to me," he mused. "At first, I thought it was a long time, but looking back, it's a short time. And I think we still have a lot to do.".
