Movie «How to Make a Fortune» will find a new audience when it arrives on HBO Max on June 19, 2026. The film premiered in the US on February 20, followed by the UK on March 13 and France on March 25.
Upon release, the film grossed just $21 million against an estimated $15 million budget. As a result, it became Glen Powell's second consecutive box office failure, following Edgar Wright's The Running Man, which grossed only $69.3 million against a hefty $110 million estimate.
Moreover, the film received mixed reviews from critics, though Glen Powell's performance received some praise. Amelia Harvey of Frame Rated called it "an empty story." She added that the film failed to convey anything "meaningful about wealth passed down through generations or the collective lack of self-fulfillment," despite the script's feeble attempts to touch on these themes.
Meanwhile, Joe Friar of the Fort Worth Report wrote in his review: "Glen Powell has enough charisma to carry the film, John Patton Ford's script keeps you on your toes, and the ending is a little too neat for such a confusing and chaotic spectacle.".
On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an average rating of 451 TP3T, but a higher audience rating of 771 TP3T. Meanwhile, Metacritic gave it a "mixed or average" score of 49, and a user rating of "generally positive" (6.5).
The film is inspired by Robert Hamer's British crime black comedy Kind Hearts and Coronets. Released in 1949, it was in turn based on Roy Horniman's 1907 novel Israel Rank: The Autobiography of a Criminal.
John Patton Ford directed and wrote the screenplay. Graham Broadbent and Pete Chernin served as co-producers. In addition to Powell, the cast includes Margaret Qualley, Jessica Henwick, Bill Camp, Zach Woods, Ed Harris, and Topher Grace.
