HGTV has renewed its competition series "Beach Rumble," and it appears the wave of change that has swept the show's new season has brought with it "a lot of nervous breakdowns" for the contestants, as well as emotional outbursts from its celebrity mentors.
In the fifth season of the popular series, the host of the show "Rock the Block"« Ty Pennington will return as one of the team's three advisers, and two will also appear new Co-hosts: star of the show "100 Day Dream Home"« Mika Kleinschmidt and star of the show «Renovation Resort» Sarah Baumler , who previously served as a judge on the show "Battle on the Beach" along with her husband Brian Baumler .

As always, each couple allocated the same budget for their property renovations. This time, it was $100,000, earmarked for a complete overhaul of the largest beachfront homes in "Battle of the Beach" history.
This season, weekly contest winners have a new option: they can immediately receive a weekly prize of $3,000 to use towards a makeover, or try their luck and add $6,000 to the final $50,000 jackpot.
In a region where the average weekly rent ranges from $1,900 to $2,800, and can reach $7,000 during peak season, tensions between teams are also common, and Pennington told Realtor.com® that emotions often got out of hand.
«"I have so many nervous breakdowns on my team that I thought we should design a cry room where we could go during vacation and just cry and scream," he suggests, while acknowledging that renovating while staying at a relative's house can be challenging.
«"I don't think I could ever do a show with a family member because I'd have to cut everything out," he jokes. "It'd just be, 'Beep-beep-beep.'".
The pressure also got the better of Baumler, and she told Realtor.com about the moment she reached her breaking point during filming.
«"I personally had a bit of a breakdown while filming 'Battle Beach,' where I had to pull Ty and Mika aside and vent a bit and get some mentorship from Ty," she shares, before detailing the initial challenges of finding her voice in the new role.
«I remember standing on the beach with Mika and Ty and thinking, „Help, I don’t know how to handle this. I need advice. I need help… [on] where to push back and when to say, „Hey, I think you’re going in the wrong direction. Can we stop before it’s too late?“ Because I was kind of sitting back and thinking, „This is their decision. I’m here to support them and guide them,“ and it was starting to take a toll on them.».

According to Kleinschmidt, a winner of competitions such as "Rock the Block," "Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge," and "100 Day Hotel Challenge," such setbacks have become an expected part of the renovation competition process.
«There is always a setback before a breakthrough, so if you are in a series of competitions and you have No "By the time you're about to relapse, you're probably just not caring or not working hard enough," she says.
Thanks to their professional pride in their design work and their emotional attachment to their teammates, Baumler, Kleinschmidt, and Pennington care deeply about their players and go to great lengths to help them succeed. Ultimately, however, the HGTV stars have learned to let their "Beach Battle" teams steer their own ship.
«"They have $50,000 at stake, so they have to be in control of the situation, and we act as a sort of GPS navigator. But sometimes they might want to take a wrong turn before we give them the direction, and that's okay, because this is really their chance to prove themselves," explains Kleinschmidt.
«"We're always there when they need us... but it's their platform and it's a unique opportunity, so we don't want to overstep the mark.".
All teams were tasked with increasing the rental value of their vacation home, and while Pennington points to obvious improvements that always pay off, he also emphasizes the importance of creativity.
«"If you can add a bathroom, if you can convert a windowless room into a bedroom, if you can make changes that will increase the value of your home… but like all design shows, there's still a design aesthetic involved," he begins.
«It’s that moment when you first walk in… it’s the visual impact, and given how much added value can be gained from space, I think that’s why we love these design exhibitions – it’s that visual impact,» he continues.
When asked about the current backlash from fans towards the winning house on the latest season of Rock the Block, Kim Wolfe и Chelsea Meissner were declared champions despite public perception that other competitors had inflated their property values, Pennington says style is subjective.

«Sometimes people make really bold decisions, and I think that’s great,” he says. “But you know, watching people’s comments, I realize that sometimes the most conservative options turn out to be the most popular, and that really interests me. It’s like art. Who can say who’s the best artist?”, Picasso or the one who has no ear?»
For Kleinschmidt, an objectively bad design solution is one that turns off guests. While filming the show "Battle on the Beach," while renting a short-term home, the HGTV professional recalls coming face to face with a rather unpleasant decor element.
«"I lived right by the water, and there was a cute little fireplace, and the first day I checked in, I was like, 'Okay, I'm alone,' and that was great. But then I noticed these weird little gargoyle figurines in the fireplace," she says. "They were just so creepy.".
«"It was a really nice apartment that was being rented out, but I don't understand why they left that there," Kleinschmidt adds.
Her advice: Don't create a place "so personal that when someone goes there, they're like, 'What is this?'"«
After a successful performance in the last Beach Battle competition, and as spring approaches summer, all three amazing mentors have certainly earned their day at the beach.
«"I love the ocean; it's the best," says Pennington. "The feeling of the salt not only in your hair but on your body is just amazing; even my dogs love it.".
«"I just got back from Aruba yesterday, so I just washed the salt and sand out of my hair," Kleinschmidt adds.
«"It's time for me to take a vacation, definitely time," Baumler says. "I'm still filming right now, but I'm planning on taking a break this summer.".
