this week King Frederick X swapped the palace for the deck of one of Denmark's most recognizable royal vessels, stepping aboard the royal yacht Dannebrog for an event that had a special connection to his own past.

The king was aboard the Dannebrog to meet with recently graduated first lieutenants of the Danish navy. According to the royal family, the officers were formally introduced to Frederick during the meeting.

During the ceremony, the monarch delivered a short speech congratulating the officers on completing their training, and then personally congratulated each of the newly commissioned first lieutenants.

While his public appearances made for some particularly striking photographs, Frederik's connection to the Danish armed forces extends far beyond his duties as monarch.

The king's military training began in 1986 in the Royal Guard. He later trained in various branches of the Danish Armed Forces, but his service in the navy is particularly noteworthy.
In 1995, Frederik completed the notoriously difficult diving training at the Royal Danish Navy's Diving Corps. That same year, he was commissioned as a first lieutenant in the Navy Reserve.

His naval career continued in the following decades. Frederik rose through the ranks and was appointed rear admiral in 2015. When he succeeded his mother, Queen Margrethe II, on January 14, 2024, he was elevated to the highest military rank in all three branches of the Danish armed forces.
He currently holds the rank of admiral in the navy and general in the army and air force. This distinction from other ranks was reflected in one of the iconic images from the beginning of his reign.

When Frederik appeared on the balcony of Christiansborg Palace after his proclamation as king in 2024, he wore for the first time the full dress uniform of an admiral of the navy, complete with four stars on his epaulettes.
A royal yacht steeped in history:
The location of Frederik's final event also holds a special place in the Danish monarchy. The royal yacht Dannebrog has served the Danish royal family since 1932, serving as both a royal residence and an official vessel.

The 78-meter yacht is operated by the Navy and has its own command. Its crew includes officers, NCOs, sailors, and dozens of specially selected naval conscripts. Since raising the Danish flag aboard the vessel in 1932, the Dannebrog has sailed over 800,000 nautical miles and trained approximately 3,300 recruits.

The yacht continues to play an active role in the life of the royal family, transporting members of the family on official trips around Denmark, as well as to Greenland, the Faroe Islands and overseas.
For Frederick, however, Tuesday's speech brought together two important parts of his public life: his role as Denmark's monarch and his military career, which began nearly forty years earlier.
