This week, "60 Minutes" correspondent Lesley Stahl delivered a memorable champagne toast to her colleagues on the CBS news program.
«"My toast was 'to us,' meaning the survivors," Stahl told The New York Times on Tuesday. "Perhaps 'to us,' with a touch of survivor's guilt.".
Stahl decided to open the bottle after Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison promised to respect the editorial freedom of the "60 Minutes" program, the newspaper reported.
But that remains to be seen.
Under the corporate leadership of Donald Trump's friend Ellison, CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss shifted the network to the right. Stahl's colleagues, correspondents Scott Pelley, Sharyn Alfonsi, and Cecilia Vega, and producer Tanya Simon, were killed in the firings.
The show's departing correspondent, Anderson Cooper, who publicly explained his departure by citing a desire to spend more time with his children, called for the show to maintain its independence in his farewell speech, which offended Weiss.
Stahl and fellow stars Bill Whitaker and Jon Wertheim told staff they would stay to keep "60 Minutes" from "fading.".
