Basquiat, a self-taught artist raised in Brooklyn, gained recognition for his work, which blended graffiti, street art, and punk style. From a young age, Basquiat and his work gained international recognition, long before his untimely death at the age of 27.
In a statement, Jeanine Erivo and Lisanne Basquiat, executive producers of the documentary, said: "We, his family, are deeply proud to see Jean-Michel's full humanity revealed with such care, attention and respect.".
The documentary was produced by Jordan Wynn, Andrew Freed, Harleen Lawal, Lana Barkin, Dane Lillegard, Eileen Sheppard Gallagher, Will Cohen, Whitney Wilson, and David Laven.
NFL star Travis Kelce is among the documentary's executive producers. Other executive producers include Rob Guillermo, Nihar Sinha, Louis Krubic, Dan Fried, Ray Maiello, Rhodes Mackey, John Janick, Steve Berman, Michelle Ahn, John Terzian, Jeremy Allen, Katherine L. Oliver, Lindsey Firestone, Anthony Konigbagbe, James Cunningham, Amy Stewart, Max Allman, J.M. Harper, Henrik Molin, and Ron Beck.
In their statement, the directors noted: "Jean-Michel Basquiat's legacy is undeniable. We see his work everywhere, from the most historic museums to the clothes sold on the street. However, myth and man are not the same thing, and over the decades, 'Basquiat' has become a name that doesn't fully capture the person. His origins have become an ever-growing mythology, and it's long past time to explore him in all his complexity and the power of his influence on this world. That's our goal with this film, and we can't imagine a better venue than Netflix, whose global reach matches his own.".
WME Independent negotiated the deal on behalf of the filmmakers.
