ImGist - I Am the Essence

Robert Pattinson has revealed the first question Christopher Nolan asked him when he was cast in The Batman.

Following the announcement that the Twilight actor would be the next Batman, Christopher Nolan had a very specific question for Robert Pattinson.

In a conversation with Matt Damon and Tom Holland, his co-stars in Odyssey, for GQ magazine, Pattinson explained that the iconic director had only one question. For Nolan, it all came down to the quality of the cape.

«"I remember having a conversation with Chris when I first got the job, and it was really, really hush-hush," Pattinson said. "His first question was, 'What did they make the cape out of?' I was really curious, and I said, 'It looks kind of weird.' And he said, 'No, no, it always has to look perfect. It doesn't matter if it blows up or anything.' I thought, 'Oh, that's interesting, I never thought about that.' And I said, 'Oh, I do it the other way around.'".

Nolan, as we know, directed the beloved Batman trilogy starring Christian Bale—Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises—so his interest in further developing the character is understandable. Pattinson starred in Matt Reeves' The Batman, and his character turned out to be much more gritty and realistic than even in Nolan's films.

The rest of the Odyssey cast clearly enjoyed working with the renowned director on set. Damon told Elle magazine that he and Holland competed to see who could praise Nolan as much as he praised Zendaya's performance. It didn't work.

«"Chris is known for being very deliberate. So when you do a take, he won't say, 'That was great.' He'll say, 'Yeah, okay. Okay.' And that's like the biggest compliment you could ever get," Damon said. "Whereas with Zendaya, there were takes where she'd do one thing, she'd do a great scene, and he'd be like, 'Stop.' And then he'd be like, 'Perfect.'".

He continued, «And, frankly, Tom [Holland] and I were just obsessed with it. Did she get a perfect score? I didn’t even get an A. Did she get a perfect score? He and I whined about it for the rest of the movie. «Did you get anything today?» «No, I got an OK – moving on.» «Yeah, me too.»«.

The Odyssey will premiere on July 17, 2026. Several tickets for the 70mm IMAX premiere screenings were sold out a year before the film's release.
