Manchester City footballer Ruben Dias has confirmed his split from Love Island reality TV host Maya Jama, but insists he did not cheat on her during their relationship.
«"When my 85-year-old grandfather asks me if I cheated on my girlfriend because he's seen it on the news multiple times, that's where I draw the line on what's acceptable and what's not," he said in a statement on Instagram.
«"Maya and I have always had a relationship built on mutual respect. We've never crossed any lines in that regard.".
The couple's relationship status has been hotly debated in recent weeks after they both deleted photos of each other from their social media accounts in mid-May.
In a statement, Diaz, 29, said that while he typically remains silent about rumors about his personal life, he feels it's wrong to lie to people and "portray people in the opposite light just for clickbait.".
«"The reasons for our separation are personal, they concern only us, and we both treated it very maturely," he wrote.
«"Respect me, respect Maya, and understand that breaking up a relationship doesn't always require betraying the other person.".
31-year-old Jama has not yet publicly commented on their breakup. When contacted by the BBC, Jama's representatives were unable to provide a statement from the TV presenter.
Diaz and Jama reportedly met in Manchester in November 2024 at the MTV European Music Awards and later confirmed their relationship in April 2025.
The couple recently lived together in Manchester, where the Portuguese footballer has been playing football since 2020.
He joined Manchester City as a defender for £65 million. In August 2025, he signed a two-year contract extension, keeping him at the club until 2029.
Meanwhile, Jama is an increasingly successful British television presenter, having hosted the hugely popular reality show Love Island UK since 2022.
She will also star in the second season of the UK show Celebrity Traitors, which airs later this year, and will have an undisclosed role in the second season of Guy Ritchie's Netflix series The Gentleman.
