Ted Cruz and Donald Trump may seem like close friends today, but Seth Meyers recalls a time when relations between the two Republicans were quite tense.
On Wednesday, in the program "« Late Night With Seth Meyers »The comedian criticized the Texas senator for his recent comments about current gas prices. During the "A Closer Look" segment, the host mentioned Cruz's argument that gas prices won't affect the Republican midterm election results and asked if Cruz has a "father.".
«"Because yeah, and he's not much of a texter, but when gas is over $4 a gallon, he'll bombard me with calls like a disgruntled girlfriend," Myers joked. "By the way, Ted Cruz, I know you have a father because he helped kill Kennedy, according to Donald Trump! According to Donald Trump!"»

The late-night show host noted that this was a real accusation Trump made against Cruz and his father, Rafael Cruz, in April 2016, when Cruz was running against Trump for the Republican presidential nomination.
«"This prompted the Cruz campaign to release a statement saying, 'Trump is out of touch, and his false, cheap, meaningless comments every day demonstrate his desperation for attention and his willingness to say anything to get it,'" Myers reminded his audience. "Man! Reading that makes you think a lot has changed in the last 10 years.".
Indeed, Trump, then the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, caused quite a stir when he cited an unconfirmed report from the publication The National Enquirer, which claimed that Cruz's father had been photographed with Lee Harvey Oswald, the assassin of President John F. Kennedy.
«"What was he doing to Lee Harvey Oswald just before he died, just before the shooting?" Trump asked in an interview with Fox News. "It's terrible.".
Both Cruz and his father denied the report before Cruz withdrew his candidacy after losing the Indiana primary.
«"That's ridiculous. That's ridiculous. I wasn't in New Orleans at the time," Rafael retorted. "That's typical Donald Trump. He just attacks, makes all sorts of innuendos, and makes baseless accusations.".
«"This man is a pathological liar," Ted Cruz told reporters at the time. "He doesn't know the difference between truth and lies. He lies with virtually every word he says. And, in what I believe is a textbook psychology technique, he responds by accusing everyone else of lying.".

A year later, the former publisher National Enquirer David Pecker testified at Trump's hush-money trial, claiming the tabloid completely fabricated the negative story.
