When asked if her then-husband was upset by the possibility of cancer, Stone replied, "No, no," implying that he was more upset by the removal of her breasts.
«"And then the doctor said to him, 'If I had more patients like her, there would be more women alive today. You need to calm down.' And I said, 'I make the decisions. Not you.' And that was the end of the marriage," added Stone, who was married to journalist Phil Bronstein from 1998 to 2004 and producer Michael Greenberg from 1984 to 1990.
She continued, «That was it. That was the end of it… It all happened right there in the room. It was obvious it was over. It was over. He thought I was ridiculous. He thought I was stupid. He thought I made too many decisions on my own.».
Stone previously revealed that she had undergone surgery to remove benign tumors, writing in her 2001 memoir «The Beauty of a Double Life »"that the tumors were "gigantic, bigger than my breast alone.".
In 2023, the actress told PEOPLE that she was prepared to have her breasts removed after a mammogram revealed a potential problem.
Stone said she was "told I had breast cancer because the tumor was bigger than my breast—and they were sure I couldn't have a tumor like that unless it was cancer"—and later learned she didn't have the disease.
«"But I went to the hospital and said, 'If you operate on me and it turns out to be cancer, please remove my breast because I am not the person my breasts define me,'" she continued.

In her memoir, Stone also revealed that after surgery to remove tumors and undergo breast reconstruction, she discovered that the plastic surgeon had installed larger implants without her consent.
«"When the bandages came off, I discovered my breasts had increased a full cup size, and he said they 'matched the size of my hips better,'" Stone wrote in her memoir. "He had altered my body without my knowledge or consent.".
And when Stone asked her surgeon about her breast size, she says he replied that he "thought I would look better with bigger, 'better' breasts.".
