For Rue Bennett, it's the end of the road. A week after the TV series "Euphoria"« Jacob Elordi died, the HBO drama bid farewell to its leading lady, Zendaya. The Emmy-winning star's troubled alter ego died midway through the Season 3 finale—and the supposed series finale—in "In God We Trust," after taking painkillers laced with fentanyl.
«"It felt like a fair ending," the creator said. «"Euphoria »" Sam Levinson in a video about the making of the finale. "The honest ending is that people like Rue don't survive.".

«"People relapse, they ruin everything, they're not ready to quit," Levinson added, drawing a parallel between Rue's tragic farewell and his own experience battling addiction. "I can say with absolute certainty that if I were going through what I did in my youth, I wouldn't be here either.".
Although Zendaya famously skipped the final interviews, footage of her farewell to the crew opened the 12-minute clip. "I just want to say thank you," the actress said as she prepared to leave the show. "I'm incredibly grateful to each and every one of you, and many of you have been here from the very beginning and watched me grow. It's been such a pleasure and an honor—thank you so much.".
It's worth noting that Rue was unaware of the deadly ingredient in the painkillers when she took them. They were a parting "gift" from crime boss Alamo Brown (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), who learned from Maddie (Alexa Demie) that Rue was collaborating with the DEA, gathering information on his operations. While visiting her sponsor, Ali (Colman Domingo), Rue takes one of these pills and, by all appearances, wakes up refreshed.
Turning on the news, she receives unexpected information about the condition of an old friend. Fezko O'Neil—played by the late Angus Cloud—has made an incredible escape from a Los Angeles-area prison. Cloud died in 2023, but Levinson kept his character in the universe. «Euphoria» . In the first episode of Season 3, it was revealed that Rue's close friend is in prison and still pining for Lexi (Maude Apatow), with whom he apparently began a romantic relationship last season.
«"When Angus died, it was hard," Levinson said last month at the Los Angeles premiere, fighting back tears. "I loved him very much and fought hard to keep him clean. The year he died, he was one of the 73,000 people in America who died from a fentanyl overdose.".

She drives to her childhood home, replaying images of her younger self in her mind along the way. When a police roadblock blocks her path, she escapes the officers and sneaks into the house. Once inside, she wanders the empty hallways until she finds her mother reading the Bible. Crying, Rue reaches out to her mother, overwhelmed with joy at this long-awaited moment of reunion.</p><p> But it turns out it was a death dream. As she embraces her mother, the real Rue suffocates as fentanyl drains the life from her. When Ali emerges from his bedroom, he finds Rue's body and wishes her peace before calling her mother. The news quickly spreads among her friends; Jules (Hunter Schafer) sadly finishes a portrait of her former lover, and Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) and Lexie fondly remember her smile before going their separate ways. We last see Cassie alone in the house she briefly shared with Nate (Elordi), unsure of what the future holds.</p><p> Ali, on the other hand, decides to take revenge himself. Dressed in military fatigues and armed with a shotgun, he enters the Alamo strip club and engages the cowboy-hat-wearing killer, Roo, in an old-fashioned Western duel that ends with the bullet-riddled Brown falling. Ali then visits the farm where Roo found peace—and newfound faith—in the season's first episode and bids his friend farewell with a prayer.</p><p> «"May her memory be a blessing," he says, looking up to see a beaming Rue across the table. "Amen," she replies. "We fell in love with this character, this girl who is flawed and messed up, but who has a good heart.".</p><p> «"I was so lucky that my first major stage partner turned out to be a kindred spirit," Schafer echoed. "Zi is someone I'll be hanging out with for ages; I love her to the moon and back.".</p><p> For his part, Akinnuoye-Agbaje noted that Rue's death reflects where the character began, back in season one. "Ru's character voiced many of the yearnings, fears, and struggles of the younger generation," the actor said. "I think Sam handled the consequences of that very sensitively. Many, many fans will be devastated by the way she ended her story, and by Alamo killing her with the sword she wielded.".</p><p> «"Ultimately, I wanted to tell an honest story about addiction," Levinson said matter-of-factly, discussing how Roo's death symbolizes the closing of a tragic cycle. "I also wanted to tell a story about grief and the emotional turmoil it can cause. I've always been against utopian narratives. Our show is known for not sparing the audience.".</p><p> Despite mixed reviews, the third season <em>«"Euphoria</em> »" has become a ratings hit for HBO, and Zendaya's emotional exit could put her back in the running for an Emmy.
