Euphoria is leaving the chaos train. The HBO series is officially ending its third season, which ended Sunday with the death of its lead character, Roe Bennett, played by Zendaya.
Series creator Sam Levinson confirmed its end in an interview with Popcast Sunday. In the final episode, which also served as the series finale, the character tragically died from an overdose of painkillers laced with fentanyl. Viewers watched as a drug-addled Rue was shown old footage of her with her sister and her friends, as well as Fezko, played by the late Angus Cloud.
«"I felt like it was a fair ending," Levinson said in an interview aired after the Season 3 finale. "The fair ending is that people like Rue don't survive.".
This decision wasn't unexpected, given Rue's death. Zendaya had previously stated in interviews that she considered the third season to be the end of the series, but rumors intensified after HBO described Sunday's release not as the series finale, but as the beginning of a new season.
The penultimate episode also saw the death of Nate Jacobs (Jacob Elordi), leaving only Cassie (Sydney Sweeney), Jules (Hunter Schafer), Maddie (Alexa Demie), and Lexi (Maude Apatow) as potential original characters to continue the show's story.
Rue's death thrust Colman Domingo's character, Ali, into the spotlight, as the troubled woman's sponsor took matters into his own hands and killed drug lord Alamo Brown (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) for supplying Rue with drugs. He then traveled to the family's remote Texas home, where Rue met at the beginning of Season 3, to honor her memory—the last place she claimed to have known peace.
«"I knew I wanted to experience Rue's death through [Ali]," Levinson said. "There's a certain helplessness to it. It was really important that Colman was able to convey that to us, the audience.".
